umm, I think I have to admit the fact that I am a size 16 & not the size 14 I have been stuffing myself into.
I need a dress for a weddign in October & I have tried on a few 14s at Loehmann's & can't zip them.
Does anyone have any suggestion for cocktail dresses in larger sizes? I know where to look for sportswear, but not dresses.
TIA.

Re: plus sized dresses?
I've never been, but does Lane Bryant have dresses? I think Ann Taylor Loft has size 16 as well. Lord & Taylor perhaps

Re: plus sized dresses?
I am a size 16 (finally!) but was an 18 and a women's 18. In my experience, the larger sized stores, like Lane Bryant and Avenue did not have a great selection of dressy dresses. I always have the best luck at Macy's or Lord and Taylor.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, I checked the Lane Bryant website & what they did have was very drapey.
Is there a differnce between a women's 18 & just an 18?

Yes I would say so since 14s are tight on me and I am wearing a 14W thats literally falling off me right now.
I agree with the other ladies - stick to Macys and dept stores.
I love the first line in this thread - its actually something I have been trying to come to grips with myself!
Good luck!

Well, there was a zipping incident sunday witha dress I bought last year & wanted to wear to a Christening, so that was sort of the final straw for me. It is very unsexy to have your husband struggle to get you in your dress.
Anyway, I didn't even knwo ther was a 14W! Maybe that's what I need. I thought since I was borderline I wouldn't beable to find something that I could try on in 2 sizes.
I usually try on a 14 & it is the bigest size & I figured if I went to a store or department with larger sizes, they'd start at 16, and that might be too big in somer things.
Thank for all your help.

Re: plus sized dresses?
Well, just like in smaller sizes, there is no standard size that always fits
The women's sizes are sort of a half-size or a size larger than the regular. So a 14W is about a regular 16. But, I find it can depend on the brand. I can sometimes fit into regular 16 and 18, but a 14W in some brands can be too big. I would say try on any 14W and regular 16s and maybe even the 16W and see what fits best.
Sometimes we get so caught up in the number, that we don't try on something that might look great because it has a larger number on the tag. Dresses are harder, I think, because few people are perfectly proportioned and may be different sizes on top and bottom.

Re: plus sized dresses?
I'm 'on my way down' from 18 (finally back at 14 and losing..yay!) and I found some nice things surprisingly at Marshalls a few times. I also found that the 'W' made a difference..and yes, Macys had some nice stuff for my size at that time.

Re: plus sized dresses?
Surprisingly, Dress Barn Woman has a decent selection of fancier dresses. I got this one in May and and this pic is from a wedding three weeks ago (don't mind my bra under the dress)

Re: plus sized dresses?
It's not just that a 14W is equiv toa 16..the proportions are totally different, I think women;s stuff if a little shorter and wider cut..so A 14W is totally different from a 16.
I like Jessica mcClintock for dresses

I agree - sometimes I cant fit into a 16 but when I wear a 14W I am litterally SWIMMING in them!!
