Does anyone work in Manhattan and know someone who commutes every day from the Poconos? DH and I went for a ride up there over the weekend and sat with a realtor. It is unbelievable the amount of house you get for the money out there, custom built!
BUT, I wonder what the commute is really like. Lots of people do it, but I want to hear straight from the horse's mouth that it would be worth it.

Hey no hijacking! (totally kidding - ) Actually I'd like to know that myself as well. I don't think any place pays like NY though.

NOT true! I know someone on this site who just bought a house in GA and she and her DH both increased their NYC salaries significantly!!

I've been asking around... the economy there is not so terrific.
I would totally consider it though since it's so close to NY!

Re: Poconos Commute
My FH works with a guy who lives in Poconos & works in the city, on a good day it'll take him 21/2 / 3 hours, however he was complaing that all that has to happenis that there has to be one accident & he won't be home for at least 4 hours... He moved in Dec. & Friday will be his last day working @ FH's company b/c the commute is just too much

It would take at least a decade for that to happen.

Katherine...good luck with the search!! I don't know someone who commutes from the Poconos, but I have a co-worker who commutes from Orange County and it takes her a little over an hour each way. She takes an express bus into Grand Central. And one of my best friend's used to commute from Ozone Park to Stamford...it would take her close to 2 hours each way. It's a huge sacrifice, but you do get a gorgeous house! I wonder how exhausted you'll be once you leave work though...I hope the job market out there is good!!

Really now. Good to know. Well, I'll just have to be the best host ever when you guys come over so that you won't ever want to leave!
Seriously, Jenn's house (Pookiesangel) is dreamy! That's probably where we would have moved to if GA wasn't an option.

Re: Poconos Commute
Guys, I'm telling you, I keep weighing the pros and the cons. You get so much HOUSE! And it's YOURS (nobody else ever lived in it and it's built to your specifications). It's friggin fabulous. We told the realtor 'will somebody please put commuter trains up here?!' The boom would be unbelievable.

Re: Poconos Commute
I used to work with a woman who commuted from the Stroudsburg area to NYC and it took her at minimum 1 1/2 hours. She's been trying to find a similar job to what she's doing now up there, but they don't pay anywhere near what she makes in NYC and she works at a non-profit. That doesn't mean there's no work up there though. NJ is just a short drive away.

Re: Poconos Commute
If I could find a law firm in a nearby NJ area that pays comparably to what I make now, I'd be set for sure. I live in NJ as it is.

I have to be honest, I would definitely consider PA first since it's at least closer to NY and the climate is more similar. (as much as I beyotch about the snow, I would miss it! )
moot point however... I need to convince my DH that we need to move out of state. who would have thunk it?! How the tables have turned!! I always thought he was going to try and convince ME to move.
