I was raised as a Catholic, but have a more liberal view rather than a conservative view. ( I hope no one is offended. I RESPECT both sides) I have not been to church, because I am not a fan but I still have faith.
I am uncomfortable with going to confession b4 the wedding. I feel my personal life is just that. PERSONAL. Am I the only one that feels this way?

Why do you have to go to confession before the wedding? If you're uncomfortable with it, why would you go? Did someone tell you it's necesary? (I'm just curious because I didn't do pre cana or any of that yet, so I'm just wondering if confession before the wedding was a standard thing I didn't know about)

My family told me that I had to go and they all went as well before they got married. I know it sound bad, but I don't need to go through anyone to ask forgiveness. I am hoping if I don't mention it to the priest it will not be recognized, but I would hate if it was still mandatory like it was years ago.

As far as I have been told it is mandatory-it could be something that the church has kind of let go of and some keep it mandatory. I would just ask and see what they say

we're TOTALLY in the same boat. We're both raised Catholic... While we agree with the moral lessons 'help those who are less fortunate ....' , we both cringe when they start mixing theology and politics....
We did the pre-cana already, and they didn't mention confession.... but as all Catholics know, you must go prior to receiving any new sacrament..... so sure we have to go.....
I view confession this way.... I will confess things I think I did that were morally wrong.... (lie to anyone to make your own life easier? Make yourself unavailable when a family member needed help? Turned a blind eye to a destitute person?)
That laundry list of possible deeds does not include confessing that I voted for a politician the church doesn't like! Not a sin, rather an opinion...
The desire to influence politics by invoking religion compromises both philosophies.... to me, that's a sin.....

You are asked to go to Confession before you are married in the Church because you should be in a 'state of grace' (i.e. free of mortal sin) before you receive the SACRAMENT of marriage, which is what makes getting married in a Church different from getting married on the beach or a city hall...
they can't 'make you go' but it is advised. In fact, for Catholics it is recommended that you go at least twice a year, if not more. you are supposed to receive Confession before you receive any Sacrament (even Communion... although most of us do not weekly to Confession, I know i don't) so I definitely want to make it a point to receive confession before i marry in the Church. Me, I am not always comfortable with Confession, particualrly if i dont' know the priest, but I ALWAYS feel so much better afterwards... like a load has been lifted off my shoulders... and confession doesn't have to be about 'listing all the things you've done wrong'... some of my most spiritual confessions have been conversations and a true dialogue with the priest about life....
