Poll - be honest

I work in the photo industry and I'd say that depending on the level of importance you put on the photos it may or may not work for you.

Definitely look at their work. Their style is very important.

You'll have to be very specific about the list of photos you want and I'd make a time line of the day and when you want them taking photos of what. An experienced wedding photographer already knows the flow of things and when to be where.

A friend of mine used a kinda new photographer a year or so ago and when she got her proofs back there wasn't a single full length photo of her in her dress. (this was in Maryland so don't worry it's not anyone's photographer). Just make sure you cover EVERY detail.

Saving money can be great as can giving someone the opportunity to build a business. I'm sure they'd throw you some extra perks for the opportunity.

I'd say no because you get what you pay for. I'd let them take the pics but I'd hire someone else too.

I would be cautious of doing it only because the photos are the one thing you have after the day is done. Even if you hire a pro as well many of them have a clause in the contract that people may not phtograph around them while they work. This is to prevent people from stnding behind him while he takes a group shot & then buying it elsewhere instead of from them.

i say definetly no. only b/c, fh & i agree that we will spend the most of the bulk of the $$ on our pictures/video. if they come out crappy or not at all, what are you left with. i know you may want to give someone a chance, but let them take pics at a b-day party or even an e-party. both occassions are important yes, but the wedding is where you cannot have someone who doesn't know what they are doing. I would say to try and get a job as an assistant to a photographer if you were to try to break into the field. To me, pictures are just way too important to deal with someone who has never done it before. But even if they weren't, I still would not because there's no company behind this person. Thus, there are no repercussions if they don't show up or something goes terribly wrong.

I would let them do it, if it was inexpensive / possibly free! But I would definately also HIRE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER!

You never know, you may get really great pictures, and different angles and style of photos from them. But I wouldn't rely on that person 100%

Everyone needs to start somewhere!
There are some pics that family memebers / co-workers / friends took at our wedding that the 'PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER' didn't get, or they got nicer angles etc.....u

I don't know if I really have anything new to add, buty don't you ask some of these questions to the photographers who did your wedding? You already have a relationship with them and they may be able to point you in a better direction, or even let you tag along to a few weddings to get the feel for them. I wouldn't really volunteer to do this at a friends wedding because you'll miss helping your friends celebrating. Maybe some girls here would be ok with you taking extra shots at their wedding and maybe just pay for your film. That way you wouldn't even have to make a whole day of it. Maybe you could do just the ceremony or a couple of hours during the reception. That way you could start building your portfolio and the bride will have some extra shots.

Good point nferrandi. I've spoken to my photographer a little bit but have a meeting with her in the next month or so and am hoping to have more time to discuss it with her then. Thanks!
