POLL: Brunch or Cocktail Reception

POLL: Brunch or Cocktail Reception

Fi and I want to do something a little non-traditional for our reception. We thought brunch would be fun, but now worry that people won't be as likely to dance and might end up a bit stuffy/subdued. Our other option is an evening cocktail reception, which people will be more likely to dance, drink, and mingle. What are your thoughts? Which would be more fun???

Obvioulsy its a question of personal taste.
BUt I think you are right, and people may be more apt to dance etc at a cocktail party.

I actually think having like a 5 hour cocktail party instead of a sit down is a great idea and a lot of fun as long as you have some seating and a dance floor.. ..i wanted to do the same thing.. but our families like to eat and the whole traditional thing so it wouldnt have worked for us.

cocktail reception...you can turn this into something sooo nyc chic or loungy like a night club or something like that...or you can just have an a$$ kickin' cocktail party with dancing, food, and fun!

i went to my first cocktail receptions 2 weeks ago and man was it fun!!! it was 3 hours and it went by so fast!!!
they had non stop passed horderves and lots of food stations.

people were dancing like crazy but i think that had to do with the band they booked. lol

in the end its what you guys want to do.

Cocktail reception is an awesome idea. I wish I listened to my mother and went in that direction. Finger foods, little samples of all different kinds of food, cocktails are fun and everyone always looks forward to a cocktail hour...

I love the idea of a cocktail reception. You could pass a round tons of hordourves to make up for a non traditional dinner. I think its a great idea. I agree with you about brunch and people might not want to party and dance.

We just went to a brunch reception and we had such an awesome time!!! They had an omelette station, a waffle station, gelato bar. It was seriously such an great time. We've also been to a cocktail reception and it was fun as well.

Cocktail all the way. No question about it for me!! That would DEF be A LOT more fun than a brunch IMO!~

Re: POLL: Brunch or Cocktail Reception

I would probably prefer a cocktail reception than a brunch reception for a wedding. Just so long as you made it very clear to your guests that it would be cocktail only, and not a sit down meal. I was recently at a wedding that may as well have been a cocktail reception even though it wasn't, and by the end of the night I was very hungry, very cranky, and very inebriated. Not a good combo lol. Had I known what it would have been like, I would have made sure I ate dinner at home!

Honestly I said to just do the dinner...I dont know how I would feel if I wasn't served dinner for that amount of time in the evening...but thats just my opinion

I agree that if you are doing cocktails then maybe consider shortening the duration or serving more substantial food than just finger food maybe stations and such. Its just for 5 hrs to not get a full meal may be a bit too much for certain guests IMO.

It really depends on your crowd~for years I worked for a dj company, and typically the day parties were more mellow whereas later in the day events had a bigger dancing crowd.

However if your family and friends are dancing people it doesn't matter what time

I like the idea of a brunch! In fact i just saw in a wedding ad that Thatched Cottage has a special brunch wedding package on sundays 11:30-3pm.. might be worth it to check out! good luck!

Re: POLL: Brunch or Cocktail Reception

We're actually doing an evening cocktail reception because we wanted to do something non traditional. We will have hors d'oevures passed for 3 hours, cold stations, such as sushi, meats/cheeses, veggies, shrimp, hot stations including filet, pasta, eggplant rollatine, chicken and then cupcakes and cheesecake for dessert. We will have enough seating for everyone, however, our tables vary in size and there won't be any seating assignments. We think it's enough food to serve as dinner, yet it's not a traditional sit down dinner. We probably went a little overboard with the stations, but we didn't want people to be hungry! We think it's going to be a lot of fun!

I voted cocktail reception! Everything is more fun w/ a little booze!

Re: POLL: Brunch or Cocktail Reception

We thought the same thing when we first started planning and we wanted to do the cocktail reception, but after we spoke to the RH about pricing and how it works, it was coming out to the same price as a regular dinner with a cocktail hour and an hour shorter. So we went for the dinner reception.
