Poll: Did you/will you be taking child birth classes?

Poll: Did you/will you be taking child birth classes?

Or lamaze... (same thing right?) I'm still debating. Any strong reasons for or against?

My cousin didn't and she is strongly urging me too for 'pain management' as she put it. Scary, but still hasn't fully convinced me.

If you are taking them or did -- please share details - where, how long, how often??

If you already took them, was it worth it?

Let's see. I did take lamaze classes as an accelerated course at nyu in two weekends.
Honestly, they were informative but I felt that I could have put my money for something else.
When it actually came down to the wire, I forgot all the breathing techniques and opted to have an epi. But that is just me. Every person has different level of tolerance for pain and I took it until I couldn't resist anymore and then from there it was smooth cruising.

Took lamaze, it was a waste of time IMO. Once those contractions started, all that practicing went out the window. They have tapes you can take out at the library and they are just as informative. When it comes down to it, you will find your own technique that works best for you. I found staying really quiet and inc ontrol and rocking helped me a ton! I almost hyperventilated when I tried lamaze breathing!!

We took them, not that I plan on having natural childbirth, but to be more informed when I go into labor. We really didnt focus to much on the traditional lamaze, it was just a few breathing techniques and a lot of discussion about what goes on during labor and delievery, terms you will hear from the nurses/dr's, instruments used etc. We found it to be informative and we got to tour the hospital which was nice, and then we had a newborn care class. The classes we went to were for 3 hours for 2 saturdays and then 2 hours on a monday for the newborn class.

I am taking baby care/new parent classes now they are one day for 4 weeks, dh will go when he can and I start childbirth classes at 30 weeks they meet 2x's a week for two weeks I'm just going to learn more about what to expect and hopefully to put my mind at ease a bit more about labor.

I took classes at Mercy Hospital, once a week for 6 weeks, I think the price was like $150, maybe a little less. I thought they were very good, especially for DH. (I have some medical backround but he had no idea what childbirth involved) - the classes focused on health during late pregnancy, a little on breathing / relaxation (not Lamaze) - newborn care, what to expect if you need a C-section, what an epidural is all about, we saw some films of babies being born, they taught us about breast milk or formula, I thought the class was excellent and I was glad I took it. The only thing was my 'teacher' (who was an L and D nurse) was very anti-epidural, and she really had me believing that it wasn't necessary...I went into childbirth with the thought of, I'll see how long I can make it and then have the epidural if I can't take it anymore. With hindsight, I just would have gotten the epi. Those hours I lasted without it were very stressful.

I agree with StayandJohn, we did the same thing except for taking the newborn class.

I took the orientation to Winthrop and a breastfeeding class. I start Hypnobirthing on Sunday. I have a baby care class next week and I am signing up for infant CPR. Wow, I am one busy girl!

I wasnt going to take a class, but everytime I go to my doctor's office they ask me if I signed up for Lamaze yet... When I tell them no, they tell me I 'Have to'
So were going to sign up.. I guess it couldnt hurt.
