I have 2 ballgowns, and I have a few other things, like my BM dress from my sister's wedding and my prom dress from HS (LOL) that could be used in a pinch
FH has a tux, but he gained weight and it no longer fits. it's a 40, and now he's a 44! I keep trying to get him to lose weight just so he won't need to drop anohter $500 on a tux

Re: POLL: Do you own formalwear
I don't own a formal gown (unless my old bridesmaids dress counts!) FH just bought his own tux for our wedding.

Re: POLL: Do you own formalwear
DH bought his tux before the wedding and he has already worn it like 7 times, more than paid for itself in terms of renting.

I posted neither, b/c I don't have a gown and DH has a tux, but no longer fits into it.

Lori! How are you?????
My FH's tux has almost already apid for itself. He's worn it 3 times, and it would have been 5, had he not been to fat to wear it for 2 weddings this fall!
:-P
In my family you NEED formalwear because everyone has a big formal wedding (we're italian...spekaing of ebing italian, I also have a huge family)

Re: POLL: Do you own formalwear
I have two gowns and three cocktail dresses all of which can be worn to formal functions. FH plans on buying a tuxedo when he loses weight. We are both pushing 35 and I dont think it is unheard of for a man his age to have a tuxedo in his wardrobe if you consider our social circle. He agrees. Most of his friends own tuxedos too. My father, brother, brother in law, and FFIL all own their own tuxedos. If we are xepcted to have formal attire, so should they. And ours ends up costing more because we have to have shoes and bags and specialty bras and minimzers and hosiery. JMO.

yep. I agree. I'm going to get flamed for this, but I think it's practical for most adult males ot won a tuxedo
Women end up spending a LOT more, because you have to get a different gown if they've already seen you in one of them, men wear the same tux over and over, and we have to get our hair and nails done each time. it really adds up.

Good, thanks for asking! Been really busy over here so, I haven't been on much. Lately, I have the time to read a post or two but hardly ever have a free minute to repond.

This is ONE thing I'd never flame you on. I am in total and complete agreement with you. There is truly a double standard as far as men and women owning formal wear. Women can't wear the same dress twice without commentary so they have to change their wardrobes more frequently. Men wear one tuxedo and if they get a black tie/vest combo, they never have to change it again - at least not for 5 or so years.

Well, as long as it's the ONE thing...
I tried to say it nicely above, but I really think men SHOULD have one, especially if they're professionals, especialy once you get to your late 20's and 30's. I was reading some article somewhere on what to do once you hit your mid 20's (was it on here?) and one of the tips was BUY a tux or evening gown. If you're well established, you don't need to rent your clothing!

Re: POLL: Do you own formalwear
I own about 10 formal gowns, only because I worked in the Social Office of the White House and was going to State Dinners. Before that I only had my prom dresses and dresses from sorority formals in college. DH doesn't own a tux, and hasn't had need for one in the 5 years we've been together. Wearing a tux would be very overdressed for any wedding we've been to.

DH has never needed a tux except for our wedding. He almost bought one, b/c he didn't like the idea of renting clothing, but really our lifestyle doens't lend itself to that. The one wedding where I wore the long dress, I was actually a little overdressed.
Maybe we should travel in different circles
( ETA-I think my next goal should be to get him to buy a 2nd suit )

Re: POLL: Do you own formalwear
I have way too much formal wear...I don't have enough events to wear things to.
DH owns a tux and he also bought his morning suit for our wedding, which he wears to most English weddings now.

Re: POLL: Do you own formalwear
yeah Heather! Better get away from that ragtag bunch!!!!
ETA: Seriously not EVERYONE needs one, but most proessionals I find SO need them at one point or another, coprorate or profesisoanl events, weddings, formal fundraisers, etc. And in my family LOTS of wedding. In the 2 years since FH bought his tux we've been to 5 formal weddings!
