Poll for my best friend: Would any of you...?

Poll for my best friend: Would any of you...?

...get married on paper a few months before the wedding to go on your finace's health insurance? My best friend was considering doing this and we were discussing it. She feels that the day she walks down the isle is the she wants to actually be married, but she needs insurance and her fiance is encouraging her to just sign the papers and be on his insurance. So instead of going back and forth, on this, what do you ladies think? I think, since they are getting married anyway, she should just do it. She thinks it will take away from the actual wedding itself (thinking w/ her heart). Thank you!

If you are on the fence, please explain.

Considering I had a severe, unexpected hospitalization a few years back that would have run me about $30,000 without insurance, I would say yes!! Afterall, your marrying your fiance because he is the man of your dreams right? So the big party doesn't really matter in the end right? ALl that matters is the fact that you are marrying the man of your dreams! I would do it!

I myself am considering this. FH is having some health issues that is costing us a lot of money. My insurance is free plus free dental. The only thing is I want to check with the church to make sure that all is done the same on that end. No one other then us really needs to know about this anyway. That way the guests know no different.

i voted no. but who am I kidding after reading the post if I had serious health issues or if my fh was sick I would do it too.

I would do it. I actually knew someone that planned their wedding around when they could get on their husbands health insurance...

I wanted to do it, but FH is against it for those reasons. Meantime, because of my health problems, I could end up in the hospital at any given time (which he knows) and run up $$$$ in bills, and he would still say no....

I would.. signing papers is nothing like your WEDDING DAY!!!

I dont think anything could take away from it.

Re: Poll for my best friend: Would any of you...?

I wanted to get married in Vegas right after we got engaged. I'd been paying $400 a month for health insurance. We were engaged for 11 months (12 if you count the fact that I ened up paying for the month in which we were married). We had already looked into getting me on his plan as a co-habiting couple but we were not able to prove that.

I thought that the Vegas wedding would be a fun memory and would cost us much less than 11-12 months of health insurance.

My DH wasn't interested in the Vegas wedding at all and refused. I was really upset and still don't totally understand. However, he helped me out with expenses.

Oh, for 2006 that same insurance would have been $450 a month. And I hated that insurance company!!!

I did it 3 days before the wedding, but not for insurance reasons. Noone has to know. They can go to the town hall. Believe it or not it was extremely romantic and I cried

Re: Poll for my best friend: Would any of you...?

This is a tricky question because i joke about it all the time with my FH who happens to be a cop and has the best health coverage out there today. I constantly complain about how crappy my insurance is. And of course i always say to him... lets just get married secretly so i can have your insurance. We both laugh about it.

But if he was all for it, i don't think i could do it. If i had a lot of health problems than i probably would. But i don't, so i can hold off for another 10 months.

I personally would want my wedding day to be my real wedding day and i do think getting married before hand would take away from the wedding day. If your friend does it... are they going to keep it a secret? Are they going to call themselves husband and wife during the time in between?

If that's her best/only option for health insurance I'd say go for it. Health expenses are ridiculous these days, if something unexpected happens, and it doesn't need to be something big, the amount of money it will cost her would quite possibly be more than the cost of a wedding!

I guess I would have to ask if there are serious health issues that are costing a lot of money.

If yes, then it's worth it.

If not, wait the month and just do it after they are married.

As soon as you are married you can be added on to your spouses insurance.

A few months ago they were doing big cutbacks at my job and I thought I was going to loose my job. I have a per diem job that I would have been able to work at full time, but no benefits. SO everyone I know kept telling me to just secretly get married just for the benefits!! We would have seriously thought about it if I actually lost my job (luckily it all worked out cause my insurance is great- no copays for anything!!) I would say go for it if she doesn't feel like it would take away from her day.

A friend of mine did this a year before her wedding otherwise her fiancee was going to be sent back to England b/c he wasnt a US Citizen and he was already finished with school. I dont think its a big deal. To me your not married until the priest says so...but others think differently.

I haven't had health insurance since July and I didn't do that. But I don't have any major health problems. I felt the same way she did.

FI and I have talked about doing this, but I can get him on my insurance (which is a million times better than his) because we are 'domestic partners.' I would do it if we needed to. There's something very sweet and romantic about having a ceremony that only the two of you know about!
