How much lower (percentage-wise) than asking were you able to go and still have the bid accepted?

Re: POLL: How much below asking did pay?
We bought the house for $545,000 and they were asking $589,000. We bought it during the late fall/winter and we were renting and willing to close ASAP. We also did not try to squeeze more money out of them after the engineer's report. They also really liked my dad. So even though they had another offer with 20% cash down, they took us.

Re: POLL: How much below asking did pay?
We're buying from people we know (I grew up with their daughter) and there is no RE agent, so they lowered the asking price considerably b/c they didn't have to pay the fee. Plus, they were supposed to sell 6 months ago to some other friends and that fell through and they offered us the house at the same price (w/o adding anything for 6 months of appreciation or the fact that houses tend to go for more in the summer)...that being said, we're paying asking price b/c it was reasonable to begin with.
The other house that we backed out of right before contract we had offered $15k below asking and were supposed to pay $5k below asking. After us they actually got people to pay above asking (which was not worth it).

Asking 189k... bought @ 182k.
But it really depends on how the house is priced against the market.
If you are trying to gague where you should go with your first bid... don't go by what people are saying here.
Go by a current market analysis and recent comps if you can get them.

They were asking $399, dropped it to $389 the day we saw it and we got it for $385. I was unsure at the time, but now I think we got a real diamond in the rough

Re: POLL: How much below asking did pay?
We bid a few K below and ended up bumping it up to asking when other bids came in.

Re: POLL: How much below asking did pay?
ours is a Condo and we bought the asking price...
I expect to have to do the same for a house...bid at asking price or a little higher...
Now that summer is here the competition for houses IMO is greater!

We didn't bid asking or higher on any homes, and got the house we wanted for less...think positive!

I agree. Present a strong offer and there is no reason you have to START bidding at over asking Price.
If you want to offer Asking thats one thing. But there is no reason to offer above asking when you are the first bid. Thats insane.
