I want a more formal wedding, so tonight I brought up making it black tie optional. As soon as fmil heard this she screamed out 'noooo' I wasnt asking her 1, and 2 its a good thing its not her wedding. So now I am kinda upset and am left thinking maybe she is right. The ceremony is at 130 and the reception is 430-1030. She thinks that black tie optional is too formal for my 'day time wedding', but it is kind of an all day function, and I know most people are not going to the church.

Re: Poll- Is fmil right?
My daytime wedding was no less formal than a nighttime wedding. Ignorant people have the impression that the wedding is somehow less fancy. It is the same exact thing as a night wedding, but the sun is shining for your pictures.
GO FOR IT!

I think you should go for it. Who is anyone to tell you this is too formal for your wedding? It's YOUR wedding! There are plenty of functions that take place during the day where people wear black tie.

I say do what you want. It is YOUR wedding afterall. Also, you're making it Black Tie Optional, not Black Tie Required. This way, if people want to go a little more formal, they can. If they don't, they don't have to.

Right my theory is you get married once ( if your lucky) and this is the one day I can really feel like a princess, so I want to be surrounded by people that are all dressed up. Thanks ladies..I feel way better about this now

Re: Poll- Is fmil right?
I've consulted 2 of my 3 bridal planner books and both say that daytime weddings are traditionally less formal than evening events-not that they aren't formal, just less formal.
However, I don't think your wedding would technically be considered a day time wedding considering that the reception is in the evening. That said, you should do what you want and what you think most of your guests would appreciate. Only you know your crowd.

Listen sweetie this is YOUR and FH's wedding!!! Don't let anyone tell you what to do. Sure, opinions are valuable, but ultimately it's YOUR call!!!!

You should do whatever you are comfortable with because it is your day. That being said- I find Black Tie Required or Black Tie Optional to be a bit of a burden for the guests that don't own tuxes and have to go out and rent them and wouldn't have black tie but that is JMO.

I agree with this. I have turned down invitations to Black Tie weddings (even optional) because I didn't think I was up to par for the rest of the clientele.
However, do what you want. It doesn't matter was is necessarily known as proper. I'm getting married in the Spring and my colors are black and red. Do you think I care? Not so much.
