Ok From talking to some people I'm now curious. When you see: 1) Black tie 2) White tie What do these two things mean to you. And how would you and FH/date dress for these terms?

Re: Poll when you see this what does it mean to you?
Black tie formal, white tie ULTRA formal
Him: Black tie - suit or tux white tie - tux
Me: I would wear a gown to both... maybe white tie, a fancier gown... see girls can dress up their outfit with jewelry, hair, etc... guys is tough, a guy can tend to look sloppy, ya know?

I thought White Tie was tails, ball gowns and everything. Black Tie is very formal, tuxes and floor length gowns

I work in a political consulting office for a former secretary of state who goes to every formal function imaginable. White tie is only used at the actual Presidential White House galas, it means tails and ball gowns. Black tie follows every other function whether it be Christmas party with the Rockefellars or an awards dinner. I only see white tie events once a year. They are very rare. I suppose I think of royalty.

I agree, white tie is UBER-formal...only time I ever saw it outside of the White House was the NSO Ball. Oh no wait....I used to work for an organization that was made up of 70-plus-year-old men and they had a 'white tie' event and all wore white suit jacket tuxes...they all looked like waiters!

I thought black tie means evening gown and tux while white tie means ballgown and ultra fancy tux (tails, white vest, white bow tie)

Marcella, I would skip the preferred. IMO if you want everyone in Black tie, don't even give them an opt out option

Re: Poll when you see this what does it mean to you?
Ok the reason I ask this is I want my guests to wear tuxes. You supposedly can (according to post etiquette) use White Tie- my parents have gone to a number of functions that are white tie - it is like the most formal dress.
I would really like black tie - with all the men in tuxes - but when mentioning it to people they tell me well these days black tie - can mean tux or dark suit. So that was why I was at a loss b/c I would like tuxes.

You know what also tho' tuxes these days look more suitish and modern. If you put Black Tie, I think you'll be OK . White tie may make them hesitant and stress out about what to wear b/c it's so formal and they will instantly think tails and bowties which is not up everyone's alley.

Re: Poll when you see this what does it mean to you?
I really don't think I want white tie - it was just a question to see what people thought of the differences.
I just want to be sure we get everyone in a tux. I just think it looks nice. And many friends asked if they could get all decked out My wedding party might wear tails though - my father is dying to wear tails - so Rob said if he likes the look he will go with tails for the wedding party

That will be nice, everyone in tuxes, then your BP stands apart in tails
Do what I told Marcella, don't put Preferred... they should get it then.

Re: Poll when you see this what does it mean to you?
Another option ....
'Black tie invited' ...
Some people get very turned off by a 'preferred' statement on the invite. This adds extra pressure to them by 'requiring' that the men rent a tux. We considered the other b/c it was a little bit less 'pushy' ... but decided against it. Everyone came looking so nice, it was not a problem anyway.
