Re: Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome

I'm trying to think of the best way to describe it since I have PCOS as well.

It's nothing fatal. It's a pre-diabetic condition having to do with the insulin in your body. It does not mean you develop diabetes however. A percentage of women do however and you have a higher chance of developing (especially if you have it in your family.

The biggest symptom is that you don't get your period. That can usually be regulated by BCP.

Here's one website
PCOS

Also, everyone's symptoms are different. I don't have cysts on my ovaries though some women do.

If you have questions feel free to FM me.

I have PCOS. It's just a real big PITA. I've never everrrrrr got my period on time. Sometimes I'd only get it twice a year. I was bloated 24/7, 365 days so finally they ran some tests and saw that my ovaries are very enlarged and covered in hundreds of cysts. I actually had a large cyst burst a few years ago and was hospitalized for it. I was also tested for diabetes b/c thats a factor as well, but turns out Im not diabetic (at least not now) It also causes infertility. Which FREAKS ME OUT. I've been talking to my doctor lately and he feels that when the time comes and I want to have kids, I might need the help of other meds or might have to use other methods to get pregnant.

One of my friends had it as well. She got her period very sporadically and they told here there was like a 1% chance she could have kids.... needless to say she had a baby boy last April and everything was fine....tell your BM not to worry... they also give you medicine which can help regulate your period...

Re: Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome

It is actually very common. I was diagnosed 2 years ago. It causes weight gain and can eventually cause diabetes. It is treated by and endochrinologist ( I Love mine-Oppenheim in RVC) I am treated with diabetic medication but you can also be treated with BCP. Infertility can be an issue and outside factors may need to be considered.

Thanks so much everyone, for all the info...

As far as treating it with BCP - that is what her endo is suggesting. Is it better to use diabetic meds or the BCP?

I would rather treat it with BCP, even though my doc suggested diabetic meds too. And it took me a long time to find the pill that was right for me. Now i'm on Loestrin but before this I tested out about 5 different pills, and nothing worked. In fact instead of getting my period regular on the pill, I never got it! It had a reverse effect. Loestrin is the only one that makes me come close to having a normal period

WOW, that is good to know. They're starting her on Yaz b/c they say it has spironolactain (sp?) in it which should help with hair growth in weird places (one of her symptoms).

YES the hair growth is ridiculous. And I have thick dark dark hair, so you can see it EVERYWHERE. Basically we have more Testosterone than we do estrogen..which explains the hair growth and weight gain too. So basically once the hormones are balanced out, everything should be regular again (period wise)

Re: Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome

I have PCOS... It's a hormonal abnormality that shows itself in a bunch of ways, most notably messing up your periods... like I only get a period a few times a year, but it'll last for 3-4+ weeks at a time sometimes. And it changes how your body burns off food especially sugar [my doctor said my body is 'metabolically deranged' which doesn't sound too great]. Plus too much testosterone which can cause body hair (I've been REALLY lucky not to have had this problem so far). They don't know what causes some people to have PCOS.
There are a bunch of websites about it where you can read more info if you google it.

Hello Hall twin and almost date twin!!
They wanted to put me on Glucaphage as well, but I really didnt want to take meds for something that I really didnt have. They did the Glucose tolerance test(which was just annoying, cause it was like over 5 hrs long) but I decided since I'm getting older i'll try BCP.
Before i was on it though my periods were so incredibly painful and would last weeks at a time. I'd have to take prescription meds for the pain b/c it would actually make me nauseous b/c i had it so badly. 3 years ago I was hospitalized b/c i woke up one morning and my body was completely numb and I couldnt breathe. So i went to the ER and they did scans and tests and saw that I had ruptured multiple cysts (big ones) and they kept me overnight, while i was there i was in more and more pain and then they realized also that my appendix was ready to burst too, so I had to have emergency surgery too lol I am a mess!!!

I know, i'm so worried about that too. I would die if I couldnt have kids. its what I always wanted...but i've noticed the pill is really helping me get regulated so i'm hoping this will do the trick and fix whatever the hell is wrong in there

My friend's only goal in life is to have kids, so that is part of the reason this is so devestating. She has told me on multiple occassions when I say 'I'm going to have it all' - meaning I'm going to have a full time career and kids - she tells me 'having kids alone IS having it all.' I'll be so devestated for her if she can't have kids.

Hi girls. I don't have this but I know a lot of girls who do. I know that fertility can be an issue but I do know a few people with who got pregnant with no problems mulitple times. Hopes this makes you feel a little bit better!
