After about 6 months of expensive pregnancy tests (from being up to 6 weeks late), my OB-GYN has confirmed that I have PCOS. She is sending me for a GTT (glucose tolerance test) to see if I'm diabetic. From what i've learned (and seen at work), Glucophage works well with preserving your ovaries with PCOS. I just want to know if anyone here has taken it FOR PCOS and what happened while you were preggers. Did you stay on the glucophage? Did you experience any probs with Glucophage?
I ran into my old OB-GYN at work just now (I switched bc i live in NJ now) and told him about it. He said what screws your ovaries is carbohydrates. Actually, what he said was:
'Ang, carbohydrates are like prostitutes. They wrap their dirty legs around you and screw you. Try atkins for now, it should help a little while you are TTC'
TTC????????????

My mum is but not for POS - she's Type 2 Diabetic. Actually, both her and my uncle (dad's side) are on it. No side affects.
When your old OB/GYN said 'carbs', was he referring to how they breakdown into sugars?
Don't know if this will help, but my mom went through a bad period where no matter what she did, she could not control her blood sugar. She cut out every type of bread, starch and carb you could think of, they played around with her meds - nothing worked! It got to a point where they were ready to put her on insulin. Coincidentally we both started weight watchers - she ate all the HIGH FIBER carbs she wanted and wouldn't you know it, her blood sugar leveled out!
I guess what I'm trying to say is maybe you don't have to avoid carbs altogether but rather stick closer to higher fiber carbs.

I have PCOS too. I haven't taken any meds for it other than BC. I guess when we try to conceive, I'll be looking into our options.

I have PCOS. I was told i could NOT conceive naturally. I was put on Metformin (which is Glucophage.) I do NOT want to scare you, but start using condoms if you go on it. I was on Yasmin (birth control pills) for my cysts and for BC and metformin & I got preggo. Its a great drug & will help with diabetes or blood sugar, it will help with Weight gain but it boosts your fertility.

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome....anyone with me?
My mom is a diabetic and the part about carbs is right. When my mom fully took control of her diabetes (she was on glucophage for years) she has lost so much weight. She has been heavy for my entire life. I know my parents had tried for a second kid since I was about 3 and my sister was born when I was 6 and a half. We know that if my mom knew about her diabetes and how to control it back then she could have conceived easier.

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome....anyone with me?
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago. The OBGYN just gave me BCP to control my symptoms...well I went to a new OBGYN last month and she said I DO NOT have PCOS! Apparently, drs diagnose it waaaayyy to often with regards to anyone who has problems. Make sure your dr does all the tests. The glucose test is a good indicator.
I've heard some of the ppl on glucophage have a hard time losing weight...but I haven't heard of not being able to get pregnant.

My best friend struggled to conceive on and off for a long time and even had some interventions which resulted in miscarriage. She is not overweight nor does she have any of the typical signs of PCOS. Finally after seeing many many many doctors all over the US she was finally diagnosed with PCOS put on glucophage and now has two beautiful children conceived naturally.

actually, it is quite the opposit most people on glucophage lose an average of 10lbs - it helps your body digest sugars and carbohydrates
