My mom\'s best friend\'s daughter is getting married. The problem is that the mom can\'t afford to make a wedding now because her husband just found out he has terminal cancer! He can\'t work! Can you guys think of any way they can make a really inexpensive wedding? They live in FL in a condo so its not like they even have a backyard! Help!

Re: Poor bride
What about a Knights of Columbus? I am sure they have a nice, small, intimate wedding there.

Re: Poor bride
Knights of Columbus is a good idea, but does the condo they live at have a recreational room that they can rent?

i agree--a hall like that or an American Legion.
also--how about instead of trying to make a big wedding--just have a destination wedding to the caribbean, since they are in FL, it would be cheaper to get there. that way the father who is sick--can enjoy a great vacation as well as see his daughter get married!

Re: Poor bride
My brother lives in Fl and he had his wedding at a VFW. They had friends who were chefs and they catered the food themselves. They had the ceremony in a gazebo in the park. The entire wedding cost less than 5k. It can be done, it just requires some careful planning.

Re: Poor bride
I agree with the above. My first thoughts were if the condo had a recreational area to rent, or VFW or Knight of Columbus. Also, if they want to get married in a church, many churches have areas that you can have receptions in.

I agree with the other ladies about the KOC or the VFW halls.
My thoughts and prayers go out to their family and to her father

I live in FL, what part do they live in? My condo complex has a club house we can use for free. I was thinking of having my shower there. Maybe her neighborhood has one. Or someone may live in an apartment complex that has a club house. VFW's here are really cheap, have her check in to that.

Have them do daytime vs nightime. Or a weekday vs. weekend. Rent out a room in a restaurant instead of a reception hall. Silk flowers instead of real. There are so many ways to cut corners, they can stick with somethign that still means a lot to them (good photographer, real reception hall, etc.) and save money in 18 other places.
There's a GREAT book called 'Wedding Chic' that has amazing tips on how to save money in every area. I got it at Barnes & Nobles and its been so helpful.

Re: Poor bride
What if they just found a really pretty park, and had the ceremony there and then had a little reception at a nice restaraunt... very small relatives and very close friends only.
that's so sad...

Well, I will definitely tell her about the VFW. Her condo has a Clubhouse but you have to pay yearly dues to be a member!!!

Re: Poor bride
Some condo communities have like a 'club house' which is like their own little hall, then you can supply your own food and beverages according to the party....she should look into that.

there are many ways to save money besides the location. they need to decide what's important and what they can 'skimp on'. there is also diy-ing a lot.
you can realistically save a lot of money, if you start early and plan.
also, a destination wedding includes the honeymoon (which might be difficult with the father's health)
btw, my prayers go out the your friend's father.

Re: Poor bride
What about doing a beach type wedding - like a clambake or something? I would've opted for that if we didn't have our wedding in May. Looking back I almost think I would've preferred a more relaxed wedding on the beach!

Re: Poor bride
As excited as I am to be having my dream wedding... I sometimes think I'd really be very happy just having a lovely ceremony with my family present and then just going away on my honeymoon with my FH... No big party necessary, just a beautiful ceremony, maybe a nice dinner, and then a lifetime of happiness.
Sometimes the party is overrated... though I do understand how important it is to so many!
