eta I just read that it doesn't necessarily mean he is 100% dying - could just mean he is really sick.

Does anybody know how they figure out who the Pope's successor will be?

My friends & I were just talking about this. Apparently there is a discussion of all these high cardinals and after the present pope has passed away, they meet and determine a successor. Then when someone has been picked, they let up plumes of smoke (no I haven't been drinking).

Once the Pope passes on, 120 Cardinals from around the world, go to the Vatican and decide who his successor will be. They are locked in a room in the Sistine Chapel and remain there until they elect a new Pope.

I remember John Paul I and John Paul II being elected. Now I'm really showing my age!

If you ever read Angels & Demons by Dan Brown they discuss how a new Pope is elected.

If you can, rent the movie 'shoe's of a Fisherman' that shows the whole process of picking a new pope.
There really is a whole thing about smoke.

I can't remember exactly but I want to say it goes like this:
Black smoke rises from the vatican when the current pope passes, then everyone is locked in until a new pope is selected...to let the world know white smoke is released.
