Post office charges extra for hand cancelling?

Post office charges extra for hand cancelling?

When I dropped off my STD's and the majority of my invitations, I requested them to be hand cancelled and they didn't charge me extra or say a word about it.

The other day, my FH dropped off a few invites and they charged him twenty cents per envelope for 'manual processing!'

Did I just totally get away with it when I dropped off alllll my other envelopes or did someone charge us extra for a service that should be performed for free?

manual processing? that's the first i've heard about that. I hope its not new!

the only extra cost i had to pay was because our invites/envelopes were oversized.

If i had known that, i would have gotten the smallest invites ever. Especially when mailing them abroad!! OMG so much money on postage!!

Go to a different post office or go back at a different time. You shouldn't be charged for hand canceling. If they insist, maybe see if they'll let you hand cancel them yourself.

I agree...there should not be a charge!!!!

From what I've heard, you can get a different answer for every post office you try. There is no fee for this, but that doesn't mean someone isn't going to try and charge you. Luckily, you have the option to take your envelopes to another post office, or ask to speak to someone else.

There is no charge for the service, however some post offices may not have the time to do it or even want to do it for you...especially now since they are busy with taxes maybe?

go to another one and see what they say.

You girls are lucky you actually got them hand cancelled, I live in the Bronx and I went to get my invitations hand cancelled when I went to send them out and the lady that was taking care of me told me she didnt know what that was and that therefore they didnt do that... I ended up having to put two stamps on each of my invites, one was a wedding one with white roses and that other unfortunately was a photo of a past president

No one complained luckily and I hope no one noticed!

There is no charge for hand canceling but like the other girls said, they may not be willing

They wouldn't hand cancel mine because they were so BIG they had to go through a different machine anyway an assured me that they wouldn't get bent or anything. So, I trusted them and I am keeping my fingers crossed for the best!

I have never heard of this, I don't think there should be a charge!

Every post office spouts something different. Apparently they don't really hand cancel any more because it goes through a machine anyway for sorting. I didn't do it and I had a rhinestone on my invite and it turned out fine.

I just sent out my invitations and when I went to the post office they gave me the option to hand stamp or put it through the machine. They gave me the stamped and I did it myself..u def should not pay anything additional for that

Crashing... I actually work at the post office and they are suppose to charge you to hand stamp. They say technically all mail is to go through the machine but if a customer doesn't want the item to go through the machine then they must pay for the service. But some post offices do not bother with this charge. I know at my post office it depends on the clerk that you get. Also an FYI square envelopes and envelopes thicker than 1/2' get charged extra as well

Thanks for clarifying, because I have my last batch of invites to drop off and I was trying to figure out if I should say something if they charged me again!
