Post your favorite poem, saying, etc

I figured its nice to share and since my a$$ is feeling spiritual

Heres mine

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

'
'I love this poem, there is a strange story behind it. I believe in guardian angels and mine gave this to me. I still have it in my Hope chest

One of the few that I love

This poem is basically about someone that is in love with someone else, and doesn`t know how to say it.

How do I say it?
If I don`t,
you`ll never know.
If I do,
how will you react?
Will we still be friends?

I`m so confused,
I don`t know what to do,
what to say to you.

Do I tell you straight out?
Do I write you a note?
Should I tell you?
Should I hide it?

Maybe you feel the same,
how will I ever know,
if I never tell you.

How do I tell you?
How do I say it?
How do I say,
'I love you.'

Great thread!
I have so many .... here's one by R.W.Emerson

To laugh often and much, to win the respect
of intelligent people and the affection of
children; to earn the appreciation of honest
critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others,
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a child,
a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition,
to know even one life has breathed easier because
you have lived, this is to have succeeded.

Re: Post your favorite poem, saying, etc

those are all great! Mine's short. I can't remember it exactly anymore and if anyone knows the exact saying, please help!

Here it is:

You love me when I make you proud, you loved me when I'm sad, you love me when I'm happy, but you love me the most when I don't disserve it because that's when I need your love the most!

I originally read it in an essay from a teenage daughter to her mother. She had this saying in it which is a quote from someone else. I guess it brings out the teacher in me.

I used the following in my high school yearbook and still love it. Not nearly as spiritual as the rest, but keeps me grounded:

I love this thread.
Here's my contribution. This poem has seen me through many bad times in my life, and I gather strength in reading it. I hope you all like it too.

Learn With Every Goodbye

Unknown

After a while, you learn the subtle difference

between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning

And company doesn't mean security,

And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts

And presents aren't promises,

And you begin to accept your defeats

With the grace of a woman,

not the grief of a child,

And learn to build all your roads on today

Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans,

And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight

And after a while, you learn

That even sunshine burns if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden

and decorate your own soul,

Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure...

That you really are strong

And you really do have worth

And you learn

and learn...

With every goodbye, you learn.

JennRenee-
Wow does that bring back memories! My best friend and I had that quote everywhere - our lockers, our bedroom walls, our binders!

Kahlil gibran on Marriage:

Then Almitra spoke again and said, 'And what of Marriage, master?'

And he answered saying:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.

You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.

Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.

But let there be spaces in your togetherness,

And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another but make not a bond of love:

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.

For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.

And stand together, yet not too near together:

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,

And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

i like the poem they used in the movie The Outsiders

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Re: Post your favorite poem, saying, etc

This was in the movie Patch Adams. I searched all over for it and found it. Its by Pablo Neruda. I love this sonnet

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose or topaz
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you without knowing how or when or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep
