Postal question regarding stamps...

My invitations will cost .83 to mail. I don't like the stamps. Is there an alternative to using stamps (bizarre question i know)!

Also, if you hand cancel your invitations will they ever go through a machine?

no alternative to using stamps... Unless you open an account or print up labels from teh postage machine at work..

WHat's the big deal?

and no, they shouldn't go through the machine if they are hand cancelled.

I am in Syracuse right now and I just called the post office and they said that even if the invitations are hand cancelled they still go therough the 'automation' machine...does anyone know what this means?

I am not sure, maybe it's a sorting machine?

My invitation weighed .83 I had no choice but to use 2 stamps. I did not see the big deal. I got so many compliments on the invite itself that I highly doubt people cared about the stamps.

Annie- if it is hand cancelled- it should NOT go through the machine. I watched the postal worke hand cancel each invite and then they got sent out.

Re: Postal question regarding stamps...

I am really clueless - so on the outer envelope you have to get a stamp no matter what - correct??

And what is the difference from hand cancelled and the auto machine??

And if it weighs more than the average letter, then you have to get two stamps?? I remember sending out those larger than normal christmas cards and the post office just charged me exactly what it costs - I did not have to get two full priced stamps....

Please help - I plan on mailing mine this Friday....Thanks in advance

Bird, you should go to the post office to have the invitation weighed (with all enclosures). There are stamps of different denominations.

Hand cancelling is when a clerk physically stamps the the stamp on the envelope. Machine cancelling is when the envelope is run through a postage machine and leaves red or black lines across the top.

Most brides prefer hand cancelling because it looks neater and some invites are too thick to go through the machine without getting mangled.

i believe that even if you hand cancel, the invites still go through the sorting machine - that sorts them by state, zip code, etc. that machine does not leave any sort of mark on the envelope - it just scans the address for proper sorting.
