Potty Training Help

Potty Training Help

Anyone have suggestions on how to potty train a 2yr. old boy? We've been trying but he thinks it's funny and pees on the floor after he tells you he has to pee in the potty. Im lost. He is going to be 3 in April and I have a one year old in diapers. He goes to daycare and watches the other kids but he's not picking up on it.

Well, since he finds peeing fun, can you re-direct his 'shot' by puttig those little targets in the toilet so he can pee on them? Maybe give him stickers every time he shoots them, it will be a game and he'll start modifying his behavior to focus on the rewards!

Even cheaper than special targets, what about good old cheerios to 'shoot?' I bet if he thinks peeing is fun, he'll love the game and learn some aim.

When I first trained my son he actually 'sat' on the potty - then as he got a little older he would stand. But my son wasn't ready to potty train until he was almost 3 1/2. But once he was ready, that was it.

So it's normal for him not to want to be potty trained yet? He'll be 3 in April.

My bosses children all potty trained at 3. I wouldn't push it too much. When he is ready he will show it. The cheerios sounds like a good thing to try.

FH thinks cheerios are a bad idea. He thinks he'll start to pee on them whenever he sees them
His teacher at daycare said the same thing(not to push him) I actually have a 13yr. old boy too and for the life of me cant remember how I got him potty trained! I just keep getting from family, 'Why is he still in diapers?'

MY son is 3 & believe me it's a battle to get him to pee in the potty unless he's naked. But this week he's actually gone to the bathroom & taken off his pull up. I was so excited.
We also have started w/ the sit down method. It just seems easier. Once he gets the hang of it will we try the standing up method.

as sad as it is to say and believe me Im not proud of this my 4 yr old is in Pull Ups. He pees just doesnt poop. He seems to be afraid of the potty. I think he thinks he is going to fall in. He says he knows he wont, but he still wont poop in the potty. I have been to a gatrologist fo rhim and have another appointment on the 14th. At this point ogf him not going he is constapated(sp) Isnt that nice.

Anyway, your son will do it on his own soon enough, especially since he sees the other boys going.

Re: Potty Training Help

i have a degree with a minor in dev psyh and boys for soem reason tend to take longer to potty train....just something about it i guess...
as was already said, i have always learned - boy or girl- don't force them to potty train, they will resent it and later there will be more problems...
the cheerios thing i have heard with mixed result s- one of my friend's sone used to skip peeing and try to fish them out to eat them! (ew!)
perhaps a book or two from the library would help, or just leaving it there as an option when he wants it (sometimes when he feels like its not as big of a deal, he may choose it on his own.)

my husband dearly remembers his potty step that his dad made for him, so maybe this 'present' would help too.

(sorry this is so long and babbly!)
good luck

Re: Potty Training Help

I just had to say that my son was sitting around just now eating his lunch when he got up to go potty. (even though he was wearing his pull-up) I got tears his pull-up was dry as a bone! The one thing I've changed in the process is I tell him that 'I am so proud of you' Well, the word proud was THE word he seems to love. He keeps saying 'You are so proud of me?' And I keep telling him yes!

Re: Potty Training Help

My DH taught my son the peeing on the Cheerios trick and he loves it. He was sitting to pee but now he pulls out the stool and stands. Even when we have no cheerios there, he likes to stand and do his business now. He pushes his hips all the way forward so he can pee into the toilet, it's the funniest and cutest thing. I must say he has pretty good aim. And he still eats Cheerios as food and doesnt try to pee on them

ETA: Lots of kids dont train till they are older than 3. Usually by 4 it's kind of a big concern since they need to be trained for preschool. I have a bunch of nephews & nieces and lots of friends with small kids and the oldest trainer I've heard of in the whole bunch is 3 1/2. Even if they are not ready younger, I'd say most are ready by 3 1/2 at the latest. I've heard you have to be prepared to devote an entire week of staying home and keeping him out of diapers and getting him to that potty constantly. We are going to be doing it the last week in Feb when I am on break from school so hopefully it will be a good time for us. I also have a younger one in diapers and ugh! Im getting so of those nasty toddler poop dipes.

Not to sound nasty but does anybody have a trick with the pooping. A 4 yr old should sit on the potty at this point.

Re: Potty Training Help

My son is 2 years and 4 mos. old I get HARASSED by my IL's almost every time I see them that my son is still in diapers!!! They even went and bought him a potty seat
I HONESTLY do not think he is ready but maybe I am wrong. What are some signs that your child is ready??
Also is it bad to teach them to go on a regular toilet right away??? Isnt it like potty training twice.. once for the baby seat and then for the regular toilet?? Im sorry but I rather clean poop out of a diaper then scrub it out of a bowl

I am just so sick of being harrased about it that I dont know what to say anymore
