I need advice from brides who have already married...I was looking on the Brooklyn Diocese website and it said that couples must take Pre-Cana at least 3 months prior to their wedding. We haven't taken it yet because when I went to talk to my priest about it he said that we had plenty of time and to call him in February...this was December. Well here I am almost 3 months away from my wedding and I'm really scared that the diocese is going to tell me that I can't get married in the church....Has anyone done pre-cana less than 3 months before their wedding??? I'm really upset with my pastor because I feel as though he has misguided us.Need advice
TIA

Re: Pre Cana help needed
Wow, you haven't taken it yet? You should have, honestly. Speak to your priest & parish rightaway. I took pre-cana & foccus, it started in October and Ended in December, it totalled about 8 weeks. [2 weeks of Foccus & 6 weeks of in-home -precana]. We got married the following July. So if we started it in October, we did it 8 months before. But we had to, we didn't have a choice. They break it down into a few groups a year and thats when we had to do it. . . Like I said, I would definitely call the parish rightaway. But, keep in mind, you may have an option to take an 8 hour class instead of doing it for 6-8 weeks. Every parish & church is different. We had in-home precana, but yet my cousin who belongs to another church ,back in 2003, her and her FH at the time did the 8 hour class because thats what her church offered.
HTHT. Good luck!

Don't worry- you may have to check around a little to see if you parish or another parish is doing it but they used to have a weekend precana workshop - we did ours in 3 or 4 nights (so it was drawn out over the course of a month.)

Re: Pre Cana help needed
My wedding is the week after yours and we just started yesterday. Defenitly call your rectory and find out more though. If you do it through the parish it usually needs less time than if you do one of the whole diocesean ones.

Call your rectory. I guess the real answer is it all depends. We're getting married next month and just finished Pre-Cana 2 weeks ago. If that's what your priest said, I wouldn't worry. However, I would advise you to get it done sooner rather than later when your schedule dgets too hectic.

That's me...I'm 38 days away and doing pre cana now! I signed up awhile ago and my church kept bumping us for people that have to get married sooner!!! They'll let you get married! As long as you do it before the wedding!!!

I got married in Bklyn and we took the one day precana and that does not need to be taken at least 3 months before your wedding.

Re: Pre Cana help needed
I'm taking pre cana now and out of the four couples two are getting married before you. The three month is simply a guideline, so that you have enough time. Look for a one day or two night pre-cana. We are doing a two night one.

We live in Staten Island but my girlfriend did hers like 3 months before the wedding. I really don't think they are going to tell you that you can't get married in the church unless you don't do it at all. I'd call the church anyway but I think you are fine.

i put it off too, because my priest didn't tell us we had to sign up for it, i thought they did it through our church itself. i finally called in a panic and got in for a class a month before the wedding (and we live in queens but the only class they had open was in brooklyn). call them right now and sign up!!

Re: Pre Cana help needed
I did PreCana the first week in Feb and I am getting married at the end of April, there was another couple getting married in March.
They probably want you to do it earlier because a lot of the stuff they discuss they want to make sure you ahve already talked about it, i.e. money, children, etc.
You will be fine

Re: Pre Cana help needed
You should be ok, I have friends who took pre-cana a month before their wedding, they got married on 12/31/05. We got married on 12/2/06 and took our pre-cana the weekend after them.
I'd call the church and set it up though ASAP, just for your piece of mind! You may be able to find a one day class, we were able to do one but, the diocese we went through (The Archdiocese of NY) doesn't offer one day options anymore.

I'm not getting married in a church, but I'm Catholic and I was wondering if we should still do precana or something similar to it. What do you learn inthe classses?

Re: Pre Cana help needed
Please dont let anyone freak you out with their responses that you should have done it already. I am getting married in July and am just now registering for Pre-cana to take place hopefully in March. I'm sure you're fine as long as you've met with the priest, etc. Register as soon as possible just to give yourself some relief, but dont let anyone upset you and make you think you're too late.
