Pre conception visit

Pre conception visit

Well I had mine tonight--it was my regular annual but turned into preconception-- she started me on prenatals and told me that I didnt have to be off the pill for the 3 months that I thought I would(ever dr is different) but one thing that happened really surprised me and I wanted to see what everyone else has experienced--she took blood to see if my immunizations were up to date--- (MMR/chicken pox) anyone ever experience/hear of this?
Other than that the visit went great-- we arent going to try for a while but I feel better that this part is over with

I did not have the blood test but I did have the prenatal vitamins etc. I already know I am up to date from my regular physical at the internist but I guess that is good to know. If you have a problem taking the vitamins in the morning, take them before you go to sleep. I was getting really nauseous around noon so I changed to taking them before bedtime and I feel much better.

That is so exciting, isn't it? Eventhough you wrote that you won't be TTC for a while, I think that the preconception visit makes it more of a reality. I had mine on Monday and my doctor also took blood to check up on my immunization status. There are some diseases that are fatal to a fetus (ie. German Measles), so it is good to be sure. I started the prenatals too, eventhough I already take vitamins that has the right amount of folic acid and calcium in it.

Re: Pre conception visit

I am not ready to have a baby yet, but FH and I have been discussing how long we want to wait after we are married before we try to conceive. I know I am up to date on all my immunizations, I even went for a tetnus shot a little over a year ago, but I never had the chicken pox, I have been exposed repeatly, and never got them, I asked my internist about this and he did not recoomend the vaccination, he told me I had a better chance of developing the chicken pox from the vaccine. Did anyone ever hear of this? I tried to get the chicken pox when my sister had them and no luck , just wanted to get it over and done with. Do you think I can have a immunity, when I was little my mom and dad had me take gamma goubulin shots to boost my immunity because I seemed to get sick a lot when I was little. Any advice out there... my biggest fear is having them and exposing a unborn baby to them or having them on my wedding day! PS- By the way congratulations on the preconception visit! It must have felt strange to be discussing babies! I wish you all the luck in the world!

I also never had the chicken pox and my brother had it and my parents stuck us together so I would get it too. I had the test done and it turns out I have the immunity. It is a simple blood test, I bet you are already immune to it. My doc did not recommend the vaccine either, they still don't know what the long term side effects are especially if you have not had children yet.

It was def strange at the visit-- of course forgot to ask some of the things I wanted to (nothing major) and then last night talking about it with friends made it even weirder--esp when I said something about the prenatal vitamins!!!
They are making me queezy so I will try taking them later on--thanks for the tip--the dr said take with OJ in the morning as if that was going to make a difference---
we are joping for an early 2004 baby so I hopefully will go off the pill in feb or so-- and see what happens--
