pre-eclampsia.....

pre-eclampsia.....

Went to the doctor today because my swelling is getting more severe. It doesnt' go away overnight anymore, and now my hands are really fat and it hurts to bend them. Well - they said for sure it's severe swelling. My blood pressure is still nice and low which is good - but get this - I gained 10 pounds in a week and a half!!!! She said it's all water, and that kind of weight gain is cause for concern.....

So they took a bunch of blood and I have to do a 24 hour urine collection in this big orange jug and bring it back on Thursday. So sexy. Can't wait to shove that thing under me tomorrow morning...I can't even see my pee stream over my belly! This should be quite a scene.....

Has anybody had this? They told me to watch for headaches and vision spots - that it's not diagnosed as of yet, but they'll know better once they can test the urine and blood.

Re: pre-eclampsia.....

You have my LMAO with the peeing comment!!! It reminded me of every dr's visit when I had to pee in the cup and it would end up everywhere else, but not in the cup!!

Don't worry, I'm sure everything will be fine! Just watch the salt intake and drink lots of fluid to flush you out. Some people just retain water when they're pg, you might be one of them. And as for the 10 lbs in one week -- my sister's friend is due in Feb and she gained 16 lbs in one week!!!! She was drinking a lot of orange juice and the dr told her that's why she gained so much.

You're almost there hon, pretty soon you'll have your precious bambina in your arms!!!

Edited to say: It's the girls!!! Everybody I know (me included) who had 'problems' during their pregnancy all had girls!!!! They're giving us agita now to get used to their teenage/puberty years!

Re: pre-eclampsia.....

I had pre-eclampsia ! I was induced 2 1/2 weeks early due to it getting bad. I was lucky -- mine never got out of control... First -- my blood pressure got high . SO they monitored me -- I had to do alot of resting -- laying on my left side for a few hours every day -- after a couple of weeks -- my swelling increased -- and I began getting terrible headaches... My blood pressure did not go down -- got higher -- and then my urine tested positive for protein-- so I was admitted to the hospital and they induced me -- Having the baby is the only way to get rid of pre-eclampsia. Everything went back to normal as soon as the baby came out ! Please feel free to FM me with any questions -- It is serious -- I was lucky .. BUT -- if caught -- it can be managed and all will be just fine ! So be thankful they are testing for it -- Once they diagnos it -- they can treat you --

Jenny it sounds like the doctor is doing all the right things. I hope the tests turn out okay. Keep us posted. Drink alot of water in the meantime (after the 24 hour collection) and watch your salt.

Re: pre-eclampsia.....

Jenny, take care of yourself. My SIL had pre-eclampsia and had to be in the hospital 2 weeks before she was due and the baby had to be born or it would endanger my SIL. Thankfully everythign turned out beautifully! Be well!!

Re: pre-eclampsia.....

Elle is right - it is no joke, and you should do whatever the doctors tell you to do! They thought I had a mild case of pre-eclampsia (I had slight swelling, slight elevation of blood pressure, and slight headache), so they took me out of work, and gave me that 24-hour urine test (by the way, I peed into a cup and then poured it into the large container - it was okay to do it that way). But when I brought back the urine, they saw that I was still slightly swelled, and my blood pressure was still slightly raised, and although I had no headache, they were not going to take any chances. It was 10 days before she was due, and because they also thought she was going to be a big baby (she ended up being 9 pounds 2 ounces), they admitted me right then and there and started inducing me. Yes, the only cure for pre-eclampsia is delivery. So, they wanted to make sure I was okay, and since my baby was already within the 'safe' zone termwise, they induced me. Don't worry if they decide to go that way - it's the best thing for both of you if it's necessary! End result, mommy & baby girl were TOTALLY fine.

Re: pre-eclampsia.....

is it possible to have this condition without the high blood pressure? my blood pressure is still very low...though it's actually a bit higher than usual....i go back tomorrow so i can ask all my questions. i deliver my jug, and i guess maybe the bloodwork will be back.

hm....i'll let you know! i got surgical support hose that i wore today and stayed home. the swelling still wont' go down - though they dont' hurt as much as a result of being compressed within the hose. i am gorgeous.

Re: pre-eclampsia.....

I remember when it got closer to my due date and I was going to appointments so often and I had to pee in a cup everytime, it was SO hard!

Good luck, I'm crossing my fingers for you that everything is okay!
