I was wondering if it is better to install the prefinished hardwood floors or just get the regular hardwood flooring. I heard you can only refinish the prefinished once. I was planning on putting hardwood throughout the house. TIA for any advice you can give.

Re: Pre finished hardwood floors
we have one prefinished hardwood floor in my parents house. we have finished it more than once, maybe two or three times, but i don't think that we can do it again.
i hear that some with the factory finish last a long time. the house we are buying has them downstairs, but they are brand new so i could tell you more in a few years...and that doesn't really help.
maybe you could ask around in home depot and lowes.

I don't like the look of the pre-finnished as much as the regular. That is just my opinion, but if it is much cheaper, I would definitly consider getting it.

Re: Pre finished hardwood floors
we did the pre-finished. We bougth it at Lowes, and the pre-fin was more expensive than the un-finished. BUT- Here are our reasonings on why we did the pre-finished: Though it's more expensive, you save $$ in the long run. To install the pre-fin, you only need to hire someone to install it. (I DO NOT recommend doing it yourselves, it's back-breaking work) With the unfinished you need to install it, sand it, a few coats of stain, a few coats of finish. You also need to rent the sander. That's more labor and more $$. Also- since we gutted the house, I don't think I could stand any more DUST. No matter how hard I try, I can't contain it, and if they needed to sand our floors, the dust would make me FREAK. And lastly- with the pre-finished, it was done QUICK and there was no waiting for drying etc. That last one sold me!
Hope this helped!!
ETA- and as for refinishing, with the one we bought our installed told us we could refinish it as much as we want. It was really thick.

Re: Pre finished hardwood floors
Wow, thank you so much for all the useful information. I'll have to look into the prefinished a little bit more before we make our decision. You girls are great!! Keep the opinions coming!!!
