Preemie

Preemie

My husband's very close friend had her baby on Thursday... she was my pregnant twin (we were both due January 25th). Now my husband is worried that the same thing is going to happen to me.

Both mom and baby are doing well, but the little guy is only 4lbs and is in intensive care.

He's so excited to meet little Madeleine, but doesn't want her to arrive too early. He was a worrier before he found out about his friend, now he's even worse. I try to remind him that we're two different people and things happen for a reason, but he doesn't seem to really hear me. He's been worrying so much that he's made himself sick...

He’s worried that my schedule is too hectic… I work M, T, R and F 8am – 7pm (really nothing going on at work… very NON stressful) and counsel a student on Wednesdays and attend 2 grad classes later that evening. I’ve been doing this all along my pregnancy and I only have 3 more weeks of this schedule…

But I feel terrible... is there anything I can try to do to put his mind at ease?

Re: Preemie

Your husband needs to think about all the babies that are born every day. Just because something happens to one person, doesn't mean its going to happen to someone else. Everyone is different.
Perhaps you can have the dr reassure both of you that the baby is doing very well.

I'm glad to hear that your friend and her baby are doing well. Maybe try to remind him of that. I'm sure it hard for daddy's to be, because they really don't have much control of things but maybe some reassurance from your doctor might help....when is your next visit?

Re: Preemie

My next doctor's appointment is Dec. 3rd... which I reminded him that he should feel comfortable to ask whatever he wants to... We also start childbirthing classes tomorrow, so I think that will also put his mind at ease.

I have had some minor issues with this pregnancy, so I'm sur that doesn't really help put his mind at ease. He's looking forward to our next ultrasound so he can see his little girl again... but that's not until 12/30.

Re: Preemie

There is NO way to promise your DH anything about the pregnancy. Just tell him that most babies are NOT born very early or that small. And when they are, the fact that we do not live a very rural part of America helps us to have access to some amazing medical care.

It is very hard because none of us are really in control of this stuff and feel pretty helpless. But maybe if you bring him to your next OB appt he can have some time to ask questions and feel better.
