Original post by EsquireBride

Is anyone else planning on getting a prenup? When do you plan on meeting with lawyers? any advice is appreciated.

basically anything you go into the marriage with is yours at the end. Real Property gets a little complicated becasue if the spouse puts money into it then they get that part back. As far as any inheritance it is not considered marital property and the other spouse has NO right to it. As far as educational degrees...if you obtain the degree prior to marriage then the other spouse cannot claim 'ohhh I supported them through school' The first day of law school one professor told us not to get married until we finished our degree otherwise the spouse would own our degree.

Not necessarily true. ALL assets can be transmuted into marital property (see my post above).

Just don't want anyone to be misinformed.

I thought about it, but then I figured... he can have my debt! lol

Getting a pre-nup doesn't mean you are planning on getting divorced. Some people are just more cautious, and want to feel that their assets are being protected in case a divorce should happen. Nobody gets married with the intention of getting divorced...but **** happens, and in the end ******** walks and money talks. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Thanks so much for saying this. FH feels that we should iron certain things out while we are still in love and care for each other, rather than (God forbid) when we are hurt and breaking up.

Statistics are statistics... no one PLANS to get a divorce, but hope for the best and plan for the worst isn't so bad either.

You are right. Divorce can be a nasty thing, and it can bring out the worse in certain people. It's hard to be fair and rational during such an emotional rollercoaster. The other day I found out that school principal's have an 80 % divorce rate. Very scary stuff !!!
