President Bush's latest.

Original post by shelzyp

He really annoys me, I heard there were anti-abortion protestors outside of the White House and he came out and applauded them in their efforts!! UGH, I hate him!!!!

Let's just say there is a link, why should I not be able to make that decison for myself to still have an abortion. If I want to risk the chance to still have an abortion, with the possibility to get breast cancer, isn't it my decision.

Also why is my right to decide for anyone but myself?

Thanks guys, it was a tough year last year for our family. But b/c she had yearly exams, she was able to get it early and totally recover.
That's what we really need to focus on, as woman, educating women and girls about their bodies.

That is so true. I know women that are in their late 20s that have never been to an OBGYN And note, there are more than one. I keep volunteering to take them, since I cannot believe they have not had (what I consider to be) basic health care.

Just wanted to say, my mom is a breast cancer survivor! Yay!

In the midst of all of the posts, I missed this one. Yay for mom!! Our family is struggling with supporting two of DH's aunts who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. It is so comforting to hear that there is hope...

I do think you should be able to choose but I also do think that we should be made aware of all the possibilties and outcomes. I just was posting the connection between the two because I thought someone said that there was no connection and it was a lie.

I don't really know if it's correct to call no connection a lie. Take a look at the link I posted earlier.

What I think the problem is:

this is a religious issue. Religious issues have NO PLACE in our politics... period.

I often times have no problem with Bush- in fact I voted for him last year... but I will not vote for him this year because his political agenda is sided with the Religious Right..

Re: President Bush's latest.

starhead, ss2002 - to you and your family!

My father's mother die of breast cancer...as did her 3 sisters. FH's godmother had breast cancer, they found it in time and removed it but did not suggest chemo afterwards. As a result, she has been fighting (a somewhat rare) cancer for the past 5 years.

Breast cancer is no joke - as we are all aware - but I think spreading propaganda to promote a political agenda in the name of cancer, is disgusting. I don't know who wrote the letter that peeweesgirl quoted, but that's all based on opinion. There was no factual evidence in there that the NCI was spreading lies or hindering the progress of another group's research.

Re: President Bush's latest.

Peeweesgirl - maybe you should do the reading....

The largest, and probably the most reliable, study of this topic was conducted during the 1990s in Denmark, a country with very detailed medical records on all its citizens. In that study, all Danish women born between 1935 and 1978 (1.5 million women) were linked with The National Registry of Induced Abortions and with the Danish Cancer Registry. So, all information about their abortions and their breast cancer came from registries, was very complete, and was not influenced by recall bias.

After adjusting for known breast cancer risk factors, the researchers found that induced abortion(s) had no overall effect on the risk of breast cancer. The size of this study and the manner in which it was conducted provides substantial evidence that induced abortion does not affect a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.

Most other recent studies also suggest that abortion does not cause or contribute to the development of breast cancer.

What the Experts Say

In February 2003, the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) convened a workshop of over 100 of the world’s leading experts who study pregnancy and breast cancer risk. The experts reviewed existing human and animal studies on the relationship between pregnancy and breast cancer risk, including studies of induced and spontaneous abortions. Among their conclusions were:

Breast cancer risk is transiently (temporarily) increased after a term pregnancy [resulting in the birth of a living child].
Induced abortion is not associated with an increase in breast cancer risk.
Recognized spontaneous abortion is not associated with an increase in breast cancer risk.
The level of scientific evidence for these conclusions was considered to be 'well established' (the highest level).

So, in summary.....

Induced abortion is not associated with an increase in breast cancer risk.

After adjusting for known breast cancer risk factors, the researchers found that induced abortion(s) had no overall effect on the risk of breast cancer.

abortion does not affect a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.

ETA: This is from the American Cancer Society website....

Sage - excellent summary. I think the real conclusions of the studies I was referring to got lost along the way.

For the purposes of this thread, the only thing that does affect a woman's chance of developing breast cancer is NOT EVER giving birth. Period.

It is unfortunate that groups have misinterpreted this data to say that abortions increase breast cancer risk, which is completely unsupported by these studies - and which the National Cancer Institute spent millions of dollars refuting when they could have been funding more relevant breast cancer research projects.

PW and Kelly back to stir up some more $hit, huh?? Why don't you go back to your own thread where you can continue to pat yourselves on the back and make derrogatory remarks about the rest of the ladies on this thread.

You might not have realized but when you say things about others in another thread, we can see that.

Don't you have anything better to do than give Michelle a hard time? Yesterday was yesterday. Get over it and move on or else ignore her thread.

I really find this interesting.

My Stepmother is also a breast cancer survivor. She has never had any children. I have never heard of not having children increases your risk. I was 35 when I gave birth to Damien, so what you are all saying is that my risk is increased because I waited to have my son till I was older.
