price for hardwood floor and installation

I have seen some posts of $4-5/sq pt...is that including installation?

we are thinking of having 800 sq feet done...but we could do less if it were really expensive...

also...would you rather have hardwood floors or tiles? I'm torn..but DH is leaning to the hardwood floor

I LOVE hardwood floors. I would shop around and see who has the best price.
I dont know what prices are for installation...hubby did it

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

We just had ours installed last week, and it looks beautiful. Of course I have no idea how much we paid or what our square footage is... I'll ask Patrick later when he gets home.

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

thats the problem...the entire inside is being gutted before we move in...so we have the choice of what we want them to install...

or I guess we can have them leave the cement floor and we could do it ourselves...but I think since they are redoing so many condos...they will get a good deal...just want to know what a good deal is before they tell me that I am getting a good deal...

we just put the laminate hardwood floor (pergo) in our bedroom (almost 300 sq feet) and it was eaiser than we thought....and we saved a little bit more than 1/2 doing it ourselves

If the place is being guttered then I would have the contactor do the floor. Leaving cememt floors will mess you up with your floor moldings.

Not everyone uses floor moldings in their homes...they are not standard...just a 'finishing touch'

Erica, I don't have a price example for you - what room(s) are you considering this for? (I'm interested to hear Jenn's reply on what she paid b/c I am dying to put wood flooring in my house!)

However, to answer your original question about preferring wood to tile or vice versa...it depends upon what room it's for. I prefer tile in bathrooms, kitchens and entrances....it just cleans up SO MUCH easier. However, I *love* hardwoods in LR/DR/Den areas...such warmth and beauty!

Let us know what you decide!

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

Still waiting on the answer to your question, sorry! We are having the same crew do a lot of work, and until we get our itemized bill, we don't know what cost what. They should HOPEFULLY be done by theend of the week, so I'll let you know. For everything they are doing, we have an estimated final cost which is extremely reasonable, and from what they've told us, they haven't strayed very far from it yet. WHEW!

As a side note Claud, although I can't give you a price yet, I have to say that the floor is gorgeous, and the guys are so neat, clean and polite! The only downside is that home improvements are their side job (they are cops who work with Patrick), so they come before they go to work and the jobs take a bit longer.

Is this for the apartment thats going Condo? Are they doing the hardwood as an upgrade in the renovation? Would carpet be the alternative? Will you be required to carpet a certain % of the floor if its hardwood? Many Coop/Condos put this stipulation in for all units above the 1st floor.

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

yes Fran...this is for our apartment to condo...we are on the first floor...so we have the option...2nd and 3rd floors can only choose between different carpets...and it is an upgrade...we get a credit for the carpet we don't put down, but I don't think its going to be much

we will definitley have tile in the kitchen, bathroom and entry way...but we have to decide about the living/dining room (which is attached to the kitchen and entry way...and then the bedrooms...

Claud/Michele I will have to check the model to see if they have floor moldings...we do not right now...but I don't know if they will add it on...but it does seem easier to have the contractor do it rather than me...

In that case I would rather have the hardwood. With hardwood you will probably want some area rugs so you might want to include their cost in your calculations.

If you are thinking resale you have to keep in mind that with Condo's it can come down to a unit to unit comparison for a buyer. I dont know if hardwood adds any resale value.

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

I have hardwood floors in my LR/DR and bedrooms and tile in my bathroom and kitchen.

Cleaing hardwood floors are very easy. Just sweep/swift and mop on occassion. And they look great.

For me, I would rip out the tile and replace with wood in about 10 seconds. I just never feel tile is clean enough...there always seems to be dirt collecting in the grout, etc...

Practically speaking, tile in the bathroom is really the only option since hardwood is bound to be destoyed knowing how wet our bathroom floor gets.

When we redo our kitchen we are putting in laminate wood floors.

I'm ripping the tile up in the kitchen and putting hardwood floors down.. I love the look and IMO, it's VERY easy to clean, moreso than tile.

What makes tile so difficult to clean in your homes? I'm curious b/c my tile floor is a snap to clean and dirt does not get 'caught' in the grout b/c it was sealed when it was installed.

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

The builders did our home and they charged 8.50 per square feet. Builders are costly though because they raise the cost over the contractor so that they also get a profit.

I have hardwood on the entire first floor which includes living room, dining room, kitchen and morning room. It is so easy to clean.

I have to agree with Stef on the tile. We have tile in the bathrooms and I am forever on my knees cleaning it because I can't stand to see anything on it. The tile in our bathrooms are bright white so it does not help.

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

Claud: I wish I knew why. It doesnt make sense to me either!! HOw can tile get so dirty and the hardwood stay so clean? Im guessing they are both equally dirty or clean after cleaning - the tile just shows it more.

I have a stone like beigish tile in my kitchen that always looks like an elephant stampede just went thru..and I have shiny ceramic tile in my bathroom which looks nicer than the faux stone but shows every speck when its not just scrubbed.

You have dark stone tile right? Maybe if my tiles were darker I wouldnt be so disguisted by them.

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

the reason it's so hard to clean is because crap gets stuck in all the crevaces (sp?) and you have to literally get down on your hands and knees to scrub it out, whereas with hardwood floors, all you have to do is wipe..
Claud2001 Posted:

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

Yes, Stef...my tile is dark But, I clean it twice a week (at least) depending upon how messy little Paul is when he eats. I would imagine that a beige floor would drive me INSANE with a toddler!

Marcella - nope, sorry. I still don't get the 'crevice' thing....stuff does not get 'stuck' in my floor....so, when I do mop, it's a pretty easy job (unless DH tracked mud in from outside....then you're scrubbing whether it's wood or tile anyway.)

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

I have whitish tile in the kitchen and bathroom, and I have noticed that no matter how often I clean the only way to keep the grout from looking dirty is to get on my hands and knees and scrub with Clorox gel. It is also VERY slippery when wet, like on a rainy/snowy day by the side door. You could sail right across the kitchen even though I do have 5x3-ish mat there.
Also... I have dropped a couple things on it and chipped some tiles.

But one good thing... I came home from work today to find a flood in the basment. After tracking down the source, we determied that it was the water dispenser on the fridge. It was like the thing was dispensing water ALL FLIPPING day! Anyway it leaked so bad and long that it flooded down through the tile and into the basement. I have to wonder.... what if it was a wood floor? Would it be damaged?

Re: price for hardwood floor and installation

Claud, did you install your tile yourself? I mean, is it new? cause the ones in the house I bought are HORRID! the floor looks like a crime scene.. But I guess it's easier for you cause yours is dark, this lady had white tile.. so it just stares at ya! lol
