Probably a DUMB question...

But lets see if any of you actually know what the answer is!!!

What the friggin hell is the purpose of the garter? Why do brides wear them? Is there some sorta historical reasoning behind it???

lol i was wondering that too - i thought it was like to hold up thigh highs before they had those clip contraption things

ETA: wait that wouldnt make sense - then you would need two!

The garter tradition originated back to the 14th century. In parts of Europe the guests of the bride and groom believed having a piece of the bride’s clothing was thought to bring good luck. They would actually destroy the brides dress by ripping off pieces of fabric. Obviously, this tradition did not sit well with the bride, so she began throwing various items to the guests – the garter being one of them. It became customary for the bride to toss the garter to the men. But this also caused a great problem for the bride….sometimes the men would get drunk, become impatient and try to remove the garter ahead of time. Therefore, the custom derived at having the groom remove and toss the garter to the men. With this change, the bride began to toss the bridal boutique to the unwed girls who were eligible for marriage.

i always think the same thing? i dont plan on doing that garter thing at th wedding so i dunno if im even gonan wear one! i guess I might just for the heck of it.

No ones ever right Ro. Not even the people who wrote the literature, cause if they were, they'd be the same. They do have the same concept though. It's just where and what time line the info was recorded. But for the most part, it's for luck. Get a freakin garter, and have him bite it off when yoy get to your room .
