I think it's COMPLETELY ok if you want to approach your friends FMIL. A shower can be a big thing and a little stressful for just one person to handle, especially when planning their own wedding. I see NO PROBLEM with you trying to get together with FMIL and ask her to possibily help you with the shower. Don't hint about it because sometimes it gets to the point where it's too late to ask. Just simply set up a place and time to meet and tell her you were thinking about a couple of shower ideas and was wondering if she would like to join you in the planning and expenses for her FDIL. She might be THRILLED that you asked her and you don't have to worry about anything anymore.
Good Luck!

Re: Problem: Shower for my BFF
I think the best way to approach it is ask FMIL if she wants to be involved in planning and throwing the shower. It def is a lot for you to handle living 5 hours away. Explain this to her FMIL. If they have a close relationship then i'm sure she'd be willing to help.

I think FMIL would be honored you are actually asking for her help,. I don't think its offensive or a problem at all.
Good luck!

Re: Problem: Shower for my BFF
Def approach her FMIL. I know my FMIL was upset when she wasn't asked to help with FSILs shower (her DIL).
