I was wondering if any of you other guys and gals have this situation...and what you're doing about it.
My fiance and I both live in an apartment with little need and NO space for anything more. Certainly, there are a few big ticket items (like a better vacuum cleaner, etc.) that I'd love to register for, but we have everything else for the most part...to live in the cramped apartment.

Problem with registering...anybody else???
Glory,
I am in the same situation as you. we will be living in a small one bedroom apartment for a couple of years and then hope to buy a home. I suggest that you put everything you think you will need in the future on the registry within reasonable means, because at least then you will have these items in the future. People will want to buy you gifts for your shower, so you might as well get stuff you like/need. We put a lot of stuff like our china, crystal, sliver, ect. even though we probably wont be using some of it for a couple of years. If you think that things might not match, stick to basic colors like white in those instances. As for the bedroom and bath, these are places where your schemes might change when you move, so stick to neutral colors. You can also paint the rooms in your future home to go with the color scheme. As for storage, we might take some storage space in the apartment building, store some at our parents, and finally do some heavy spring cleaning to get rid of old stuff to make room for the new. I hope that helps.

I'm in the same boat as you - we both had our own apts before moving in together 2 months ago. Our wedding is in March 2000.
Most of what we registered for will replace things we already have - so we'll be donating much of our stuff (ie cookware, bakeware, dishes, etc) - good for tax write offs as well.
We've spent alot of time reorganizing closets (we only have 2), adding freestanding shelving units from Target ($14 each), utilizing space under the bed, and throwing out many things we haven't used in the past year. We also just dropped a few coins at IKEA to buy furniture that has more storage components.....
