So this job market is not exactly desirable and its hard to get married and plan a life together when neither of us have jobs! We are both teachers struggling to find a place to stay. I spent two years in one school and then the budget cuts cut all non-tenured teachers. Now I'm in a new school hoping to stay there! But who knows with this economy. And to make it worse, my FH is trying to find a job teaching elementary school!! Anyone out there a teacher??

Re: Profession....Teachers?
I was going for that but I hear sooo many stories of people never getting jobs and just end up being subs. I decided not to get a degree in education because of that. It's sad b.c Its what I wanted to do but I don't want to end up not being to get a job.

Re: Profession....Teachers?
Well I mean, teachers have to start retiring! I don't think it's gonna be like this forever. I has to open up eventually. It's just a matter of when. The problem is, there are so many teachers who are at the age of retirement but can't afford to because of the economy.

Re: Profession....Teachers?
What do you teach? Special ed, math, and science can get jobs more easily than elementary and English and SS. I am a teacher (certified for math 7-12 and English 7-12). I am probably leaving though. Burnt out after 4 years.
Would you consider the city? Queens or BK? It might be easier.
Also, try to get certification in special ed if you don't have it. That will help you.

Math will be much easier for you to find a job! There are jobs out there. Apply to the NYCDOE! You should def get something in Queens or BK. Did you graduate yet?
I work in Queens. I was in Jackson Heights for 3 years teaching math and LOVED it. I switched to ELA in Ridegwood and DESPISE it. It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Yea..most people say math is easy but its really not. I've gone on like 100 interviews and there are 1000 people certified for math. They always take their student teachers and its really annoying because I have experience. I am in my third year. 2 years in one school, now i'm in a new school this year. All full-year leave replacements. But I'm never lucky and no jobs ever open up in my district. I am currently filling out the NYCDOE application. I was always just nervous teaching in a high school in the city schools.

Maybe it's not easy in LI, but it is in the city. I'm a math teacher, so I know. Definitely apply to NYC. It's really not bad. Some schools are better than others, but overall it's not as 'Scary' as people think! Good luck!So wait, you are currently teaching?? So what;s the problem? I'm confused. I thought you were in school or student teaching or something.

Re: Profession....Teachers?
Ahh I reread your first post and I see what you're saying. I heard horror stories of LI schools always getting rid of teachers before tenure. It's sooo different in the city. Once you're in, you're pretty much in! I would apply. I think you would find it easier as a math teacher to keep your job. Good luck!

Re: Profession....Teachers?
I heard that new york state might be offering an incentive for teachers to retire...hopefully it'll take effect.
I know its really hard. I was in the same boat for about two years. I actually subbed in a building and that's how I got my current position.
I would just continue applying plus once it is may after all the budget votes is when they put up new positions. Good luck!

Re: Profession....Teachers?
I hope they pass the retirement incentive. However, now it looks like it may not happen for this year. The incentive may go through next year. I subbed for 2 years and now I'm in my third year of teaching. I still can't find anything permanent. It's hard and I have no luck.

Re: Profession....Teachers?
I'm studying education right now for my undergrad. Have you thought about FH tutoring privately until a postition opens up? That would be all tax free cash money.

Thats actually a really good idea. I wonder how he could get involved in that? A lot of elementary kids need tutoring? What are you studying to teach?

ITA math may be EASIER, but not easy. I hate when people say to me the only reason you got a job is bc ur math. I lucked out to get a job right out of college....i went on my many interviews, but i know a math sub at my school thats been there for 4 years now and cant find a job, and the rest of the subs have been there like 2 years. Of course I am only talking about long island. I dont know how the city is
