Proper vs. Not Proper (please read first)

Proper vs. Not Proper (please read first)

I am trying to hammer out the exact wording, what gets a capital, where to put a period etc.

When you write the year out in words is it supposed to get an and (like two thousand and eight) or is just (two thousand eight)

I'm only torn, because I have been teaching my students that you only say and when there is a decimal point. Is there an exception when you say the year???

Ditto, this is what I was told by my planner last when we did my invitation wording last week.

Don't even stress over it. Most people won't even notice.

Two thousand eight is proper, BUT if you check out most invites, they read two thousand and eight.

people do it both ways
I've been told the decimal rule doesn't apply to dates-b/c it's not math

I have 'and eight'

I did look it up on all edicate sites and they can't even agree

Thank you...this is what was confusing me and all the samples had the and in it!!!!

the proper way is Two Thousand Eight

but I put Two Thousand and Eight because it sounds smoother

THANKS!!! I was like Oh NO!!! I DIY'd my invites but pulled the correct wording off an invitation site we were going to use. i never even thought that the samples could be worded wrong....

Last year the proper way was with the and. This year it has been decided(by who I don't know) that the and is left off. This is what my invitation lady told me and I say it in the sample invitations from the different companies. Older samples still had the and, newer ones didn't.

I had and put on mine. IMO it just looks more formal. Most people probably don't even know what the proper etiquette for most things are anyway. Do what you like best.

I thought the same thing. I looked at a whole bunch of samples and everything i looked at had the 'and' we ordered it with the and.

Ditto - invitation place told me same thing and said they hate when samples include 'and' b/c it's not grammatically correct.

I searched on google wedding invitations and based on the internet, it's two thousand and eight

Here's a link to the knot's site of wedding invites:

I don't understand why you would put an 'and' - you write it the way you say it, and i say 'two thousand eight.' Doesn't everyone??

Agreed. The proper way is withOUT the 'and'... Perfect example, when the year was 1999, you would write

nineteen hundred ninety nine

not, nineteen hundred and ninety nine

Same applies for years after 2000. However, if you already put the 'and' in there or prefer the way it sounds for some reason, I'm sure people won't go crazy over it!

I was going to say the same thing about 1999 .... so true!

But I agree - no one is going to call you out on having an AND if you do.
