Protein Shakes

Protein Shakes

Anyone drink 'em?

I want to do it for a couple weeks, and then introduce foods gradually. My mom is doing protein bars for breakfast and lunch (with a salad) and then a sensible dinner.....but I think I like the shakes better, you can add fruit.

Any advice?

Hi,

I would recommend Usana Health Sciences. They have an entire product line of meal replacements that are great. You can goto http://healthyny.usana.com and read more. They have a Reset Program that I have done twice in the past six months and had great success with. Hope this helps.

Protein Shakes are a good way to eat on the run or substitute a meal BUT it is a little more complicated then you may think. Don't just run into a local Vitamin Shoppe or GNC (BTW, Vitamin Shoppe is MUCH better priced) and buy a tub of protein.

First: Protein Vs Meal Replacement Shakes (MRPs).

MRPs carry more then just protein. If you are looking to replace meals, go with this. Look for something with some carbs and fat (they usually have mono's).

Protein shakes can be made into an MRP with the help of a blender and some ice. You do not want Whey Protein because it is a fast acting protein meant for Post Workout recovery. You would look more into a blend (IE Pro Blend 55) or Casein Protein which is not as fast acting.

To make a good shake (I liked it):
1 scoop Protein mixed with water NOT MRP)
3 -5 ice cubes
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
1 bananna
2 strawberries.
Water

Blend well.

It will come out thick and really taste pretty good. The Olive Oil (MONO's are VERY good for you!) will slow down the injestion of prtoein as well as fill you up longer. The frutis will add extra taste and some extra calories in the form of carbs

You need to ensure you get enough calories from whole foods though. The shake though, will give you a decent meal in a drink.

If you never had shakes before, the first time may hurt ;). They are an aquired taste and sometimes take a little bit to get used to.

Re: Protein Shakes

Oh, boy, I should have read this yesterday!

I bought Designer Whey yesterday and made a shake today!!! I put a banana and strawberries and some ice and blended it with milk. It tasted pretty good and I bought that brand because my deli uses it for their shakes and they are yummy.

Is there something I can do to make this 'tub' better for me? Sorry for not reading sooner! I guess the shake recipe you recommend is better than what I did, so can I still use the designer whey for now? I guess I should definitely add the oil.

Also, then what bars should I eat for lunch with my salad? I bought Myoplex.....

I drank designer whey for ten years. I believe it is a good protein source.

Thanks! Did you use it as a meal replacement? Was it for weight loss?

thank you! You are so sweet!

I only drink whey protein after my workout for quick absorbtion. It is the best time to have it. I only then drink it if there is absolutely nothing healthy at penn station to eat, and I need to eat something with protein in it.

I stay away from bars because of the sugar and the bad crap that is in them like processed soy, sugar alcohols, etc. they are just not clean.
You should eat regular food as often as possible. Have a grilled chicken breast, or some fat free cottage cheese. Save the whey drinks for after your workout, when they are used by your body most effectivley.

So, now I have this tub of Designer whey....is it bad for me? I optimally only want to be die hard shakes and bars for no longer than a month, lose a few pounds, then reintroduce some 'good ' foods. Can I keep using the Designer whey?

OK, so I'll have normal food for lunch and the shake after the gym at night for dinner.....

You should have a lot more than just the whey protein after a workout for dinner. You need carbs.
You shouldn't be drinking your meals, just adding the whey as an additional supplement to get more protein into your diet.

I wouldn't use shakes to replace real meals either.
I only drink shakes to get extra protein in my diet, and like Snowboardgirl said, I'll drink a shake after a workout plus eat some complex carbs.
