Psychologist or Counselor ?

Psychologist or Counselor ?

As some of you may know, I am going through anxiety and am ready to take the next step. There is a counselor right by my house - which is good for when I feel like I can't travel. Would that be as effective a s psychologist - which is 20 min. for me.

Thanks All !

What are the counselors qualifications? What is the price difference - does your insurance pay partially?

If you are hoping to be prescribed any sort of anti-anxiety medication, you'll need to see a psychiatrist.

I also would want to know what degree the counselor had. If you are having anxiety in the form of panic attacks, trouble sleeping, weight changes, etc. I would pursue a liscensed psychologist with cognitive behavioral treatment experience. If you are overwhelmed and just want to talk about your stress then I think it won't matter (as long as the counselor is qualified). Beware - a psychotherapist is an unprotected name and is it not the same thing as a psychologist.

I am a clinical psychologist so I am biased but I would recommend a licensed professional preferably psychologist or a social worker. Anyone can call themselves a therpist or counselor, if it is a counselor make sure it is someone licensed. FM me if you want more detailed info on types of therapy for anxiety. There is help!

i think it really depends - if you are going to go on anxiety meds then a dr would be a better choice than a councellor. but if it is more just to talk it should be what you are comfortable with - if travelling the 20 mins is going to stress you out more the closer might be a good choice.
