Some of you may know, I have been dealing with anxiety. Through my health plan i found a counselor 4 min. from my house. Do you think they are as effective as psychologist? I get my meds from my regular GP. It is just the closer the better, because sometimes I have it and can't even drive.
Thanks all !

i just emailed you.
I don't think it matters on who you see. I saw a social worker with a psychiatrist. I truly think that you should see a psychiatrist with a counselor because a psychiatrist is an exepertise in the field of mental health.

First off, I want to say that I am not dealing with any medication so you may want to bypass my comments. I am dealing with a bereavement psychologist, a counselor and a social worker. I am much more comfortable with the counselor and social worker and think that they help me more than the pschologist does.

I don't think it really matters either. I would pick the one closest to you. You don't need the added anxiety before you even get there. I went to someone 20 minutes away once, and I missed half my appointments because I would have to turn around halfway and come home. I would have an attack 10 minutes from my house..

I think it really depends on the actual person. However, counselors receive less training and less education. Also, the type of training and education they receive is different. If you are truly experiencing dysfunctional levels of anxiety, I would go to the psychologist. They are more trained to deal with it. Counselors are more trained to deal with normal problems of living. But as I mentioned, the most important thing is to find someone you feel comfortable with.

First, I would try seeing the counselor that is close to you first. In my experience it is not so much about the education level, but your connection with the individual. If you don't feel like the counselor is helping then you can look into other options.

Same here. I had been under the care of a psychiatric social worker. I had not started treatment with medication until I felt it was necessary. At the time, the social worker expressed her opinions on who should prescribe medication. A PCP may not have as much of a vested interest in emotional or mental issues as a psychiatrist does. I used a psychiatrist that had an association with my SW so the two of them could treat me effectively together. You may not be using medication now, but in the long run it is something to consider. Anxiety can be very debilitating. I have been there myself and wrestle with bouts of it from time to time.

As a social worker, I think that a counselor is just as effective as a psychologist. Just make sure that they are certified to practice in NY.
