Punching holes in church programs (for ribbon to go through)..need help please

So I decided to make my own programs...and everthing was going well until I figured out that I have no way to punch the two holes on the fold of the program. I can't use a standard hole punch as it does not reach to the center of the paper (I'm using 8.5 x 11, folded once lengthwise, like a card). I stopped at a stationary store where I got the paper and they said they could do it (for a fee), but I thought I'd check with you all first to make sure I'm not missing an easier solution to this. They said they have a special machine they use.
Was anyone able to do the holes themselves?

You could use an exacto knife to make a slit in the paper and then slide the ribbon though this. This is what my sister and I did for her programs. I hope it helps!

oooooh...that's a good idea.
Did you just make a slit or did you cut out a small hole?

If you don't already have the ribbon, I think I'm going to use cord on the fold. I know you can buy them in all different colors and it saves having to make holes and tie bows!

I just punched them myself with a single hole puncher. If the holes are a little off it's not such a big deal because the ribbon hides any imperfections.

Nope. Just make the slit and slide ribbon through. It makes the programs close easier too when the ribbon is flush with the paper on the inside. We put a slit in the top and the bottom and tied the bow on the outside.

Actually, I think they're know as tassels. Here's an example...

you don't have to punch holes --you can tie the ribbon or cord along the 'spine' without punching holes...

I haven't ordered mine yet, but if you search or google, it brings up a lot of different sites.

Sorry to be so clueless about this....but do you have a picture? This would definitely be my best option (if I didn't have to worry about holes). Just to clarify I have the cover, and then a separate page inside...so I am trying to keep the two pages together and make them look nice too!

Fold the programs, then use the punch and punch them on the spine, but only a HALF circle. One about 2 inches down and one about 2 inches from the bottom. The two halves will be like a whole hole because it doubles! here are mine. You can really see what I did on the back picture.

I used a grommet-punch. It creates the holes for the grommets for scrapbooking. You can find it at Michael's and it looks like a pen. You need a little baby hammer to go with it.

fold it in half first then punch the holes on the folded side
