I just started looking into a honeymoon in the Dominican Republic--Secrets Excellence, Punta Cana. I am seeing a lot of reviews online from people who said that they were not able to go in the ocean the whole time they were there.
For people who've been, what was your experience? How was the water?
One other thing--can you drink the water at the resorts in the DR?

I went to Secrets Excellence for our HM in March....we had a GREAT time. Yes, the ocean was rough, but if you walked down the beach, there were calmer seas. The ocean water was cold, so we stuck to the pool. There is bottled water everywhere you go (front desk, all the bars, etc) and that is what we drank. We used tap water to brush our teeth and did not get sick.
Food and Service are amazing...grounds are impeccably clean. Holy cow....and everyone that works there is SO friendly! It's great....we want to go back SO badly.
I also had professional pictures done there....the guy that takes pictures for the weddings is for hire for private sessions...which I thought was way cool. I have those posted somewhere on here....

First of all, you will not regret going to Secret's Excellence!! DH and I went last June and had the best time (only 2nd to our Tahitian Honeymoon). We are looking for time to go again.
OK, now to answer your questions. Yes, the water is a little rough right in front of the hotel but there is this area a few yards to the right of the hotel (go to the beach and make a right) where it is so calm and totally private. We spent a lot of time there (wink, wink, wink)
Like Btrflygrl said as well, there is bottled water everywhere. If you have a sensitive stomach, you might want to bring some immodium but it most likely will not be needed. We drank all our drinks with ice and did not have any problems at all. You definitely need bug spray though becaude they have 'no-seeums' that attack your ankles on the beach.
All in all, it is an amazing place and you will love it!

like Felice said....we also drank our drinks with ice...no problems. I even brought immodium with us and never needed it. The soda (Coke) tasted funny, more syrupy and less bubbly than we were used to! That was funny, but it was fine.
We went in March and had no issues with any kind of bugs, but then again, we didn't go walking down on the beaches. We did take a moonlit horseback ride whic was awesome, but we were covered up since there was a little chill in the air.
Oh...and you HAVE to sign up for the regular horseback rides as soon as you get there...they fill up fast. The moonlit one cost us extra $$, but it was one thing I HAD to do as I love riding.

we were able to swim in the ocean (we went to DR in March) but I usually prefer the pool... dont ever EVER drink the tap water, always always use bottled water even for brushing teeth... we didnt have any problems... also, I would stay away from anything with coconut milk...

I'd like to add that we used tap water for brushing teeth and had no problems. I tried the Coco Loco drink in the coconut shell...I didn't care for it. The Presidente beer was quite enjoyable...smooth and light, no wierd after taste
