Puppy Owners - I need some advice

Puppy Owners - I need some advice

I just picked up my 8 week old Boston Terrier yesterday from the airport. And we're so excited to have a new member to our family.

We've been reading about crates, pens, feeding schedules, housetraining, etc.

And just have a couple of questions that we would love some advice/insight on.

We try to feed him regularly but his attention span doesn't keep him at his bowl for more than 2 minutes. He eats a little and starts to wimper. We're feeding him in a large pen that's lined with newspaper and watching him eat. Should we be feeding him in his crate? I know we're supposed to get a crate just big enough for him to sit, stand, and spin, nothing too big.

When it comes to after eating (normally we give him like 20 minutes to eat, then take it away), how should we go about the house training, we read about lining the area with newspaper, praising for when he goes then gradually taking newspaper away reducing the area, but what happens when he doesn't go on the paper?

Also should we have like 2 pens, 1 for feeding and play and the other for potty? the pen we got is adjustable and fairly large so i thought 1 side for bed , food, and play and the other for potty.

Finally is the question of newspaper, wee wee pads, doggie litter, etc. We got a package of wee-wee pads as a gift, but they don't stay on the ground very well, most of the time, the little guy just bites it and walks away. We also got doggie litter and a doggie litter pan as a gift too, should we be trying that?

I'm sorry for the long questions, but i want to make sure we are doing this right, i don't want to tramatize him or mistreat him in any way.

One more thing, sorry, at night when we sleep, should we put him in his crate or let him roam is pen area? i thought a better bond would be made if we crate him and place him next to the bed when we sleep. Also when we go out is it better to crate or pen the puppy?

thanks in advance to anyone who can point us in the right direction...

Re: Puppy Owners - I need some advice

We skipped the wee wee pads.... We penned our puppy but started carrying him outside every hour to start to get him to learn to pee out there.... and everytime he did his buisness outside he gets a treat immediately following (petsmart has a great bag of puppy biscuits that are tiny and it is 2.00 a bag)
As for eating, we found he was forgetting that his food was there.... but we gave up on the schedule... we feed him twice a day, once in the AM and once in the evening... sometimes his food stays for hours, and sometimes it is gone in minutes... he will learn...

As for sleeping, we dont crate, we have two gates that trap him in a small hallway, BUT at night we initially had him gated into a small area in the bed room. We wanted him to establish that that was his sleep area... He is now 6 months old and he knows that that is where he sleeps...

we crate our puppy- he stays in his one crate upstairs next to our bed, he lays with us in bed for awhile and then when we are all ready to go to sleep we put him in... he doesnt mind it, first week home he cried, but now he is fine with it... he likes it and he wakes us up in the AM to go the bathroom- he is kind of learning to wait for our alarm to go off too- its great!

As far as houstraining, this has been our issue too

he doesnt like the whole wee wee pad thing, he chews it- ONCE in a while he will use it to potty but not usually... we area learning his schedule so we know when he has to go after he eats- my pup only poops 2 x a day once in the am and once when i get home from work- not too bad... but his bladder makes him go wee wee all the time... when he is in the crate he doesnt go (he did a little in the beginning, but he stopped that)
when we are home we watch him and most of the time, we pick him up to go out when we know he has to go, sometimes he will go to the door to tell us, which is our goal.

Good luck, i got a lot of help from posting on here...so hopefully you will too!

If you had adopted him the shelter would help you with all of these answers.

You could go to the ASPCA or Humane Society websites, they often have lots of information that is helpful with behavior stuff.

My puppy, when we first got him, would eat a little every couple of hours, so I just made sure his dish was full. He is 5 months now, and eats all his food, as soon as I put it down.

I made a huge mistake, by not crate training him right away. He started to act out a lot. So make sure you crate train!!

Re: Puppy Owners - I need some advice

im a experienced terrier owner myself i have 2 cairn terriers. let just tell you first hand that terriers are a very stubborn breed. but they are alot of fun they are big people in a little persons body. we did the crate traing. it was tough but we got through it. what i did was i put the crate in a spot in the living room. then about 2 feet away from the crate was the wee wee pads. so we would take him out of the crate and take him to his pee pee and poopie spot. then we would praise them with treats. then we would take them outside every hour to get them use to the outdoor potty areas. but dont worry it will take time terriers are very stubborn but yet very smart.
