i am a teacher and have a 1 yr old yorkie...(as you can all see). when we go back to school, september is crazy, and she gets depressed because we leave her and go to work
i contacted my breeder and was thinking about getting another pup around december so i could be home with it during christmas break and what not.
do dogs need a 'friend' or am i being nerotic?

Re: puppy question
Honestly, I don't know but a lot of people with Yorkie's (or maybe it's just little dogs in general?) have more than one and if it'll make you more comfortable knowing they have eachother, why not go for it?

Re: puppy question
right? people are telling me that my shea is barely trained (but everyone one i meet with a yorkie says that!)
i just feel bad when i am at work, especially during the school year!
but then others say that dogs don't need 'friends' we just think they do.

Re: puppy question
I have three dogs and I think they like having eachother!!
Although my DH's dog who lived in the house for 6 years as the ONLY dog probably would like to see the other two leave!!!

Re: puppy question
i have a puppy too and will be going back to work in september try leaving the dog home alone for a few hours at a time now so she is used to it by september. Believe it or not my dog loves to be home alone. Since she is completely trained she is able to have free reign of the house. we often find her spread out and asleep on the couch when we get home. If this doesnt work for you what do u think about boarding or putting her in a puppy school for the day so she has other puppies to play with. not sure where u live but i have seen and heard of a lot of great places.

Re: puppy question
I'm not sure if it's more difficult to train dogs that are together who were not bought together...
But it is more difficult to train littermates who were purchased together (our dogs), becuase they are more bonded to each other than to the owners (generally)...so they have more of a pack mentality. At least this is the problem we went through with our dogs...but we worked with a trainer and now they're great. It was just a little harder to train them.

Re: puppy question
I think it's more of a bond...we they raised together? Since you have your dog alone now...he/she is bonded to you...so I don't think they will have the problem we had...our dogs never learned to put us first, they were never separated.

Re: puppy question
I have a dachschund (sp?) and she's left alone quite a bit. She would be absolutely miserable if she didn't have Mookie (our other dog) to hang out with.

My dog is less spiteful & less 'loopy' when he has a friend.....unfortunately, I cannot have more than one dog in my apt, according to my lease.
ETA: I have a Pug...that is the dog we took with us to our apt...I left my Mini Pin with my mom at her place

Re: puppy question
puppy friends are good....but what about a service that would come in at lunch time to feed her, walk her, play for a bit?
