Puppy resources??

Puppy resources??

All of a sudden I came up with the idea of a puppy for Christmas...

now I'm wondering where I might get one

Any sites you know of that show pics of available puppies? or any reputable breeders?

we're thinking of a medium sized athletic dog - rhodesian ridgeback, pit/boxer mixed breeds, brittany, etc.

Haven't run this by Al or my dad yet (he'll be our landlord ...

If you are interested in resucing a puppy or dog, try the SPCA
http://www.suffolkspca.org/
(I think they have pics of dogs up for adoption.

Also Save A Pet located in Port Jefferson Station, NY

I'm sure there's also a Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue...try a search for that, and they usually show pics of the animals that need homes.

I'd love to rescue a dog, but I do want a puppy, and I know those are harder to come by...

Save a Pet has puppies all the time, and some are purebred. Just an idea.

GOod luck, and show us pics if and when you get one!

Re: Puppy resources??

I found a good way to find a good decent breeder...is to ask a rescue center for that particular breed...they will direct you to a breeder they feel confident is breeding for the best of the breed...

This is Cindy
Hi my name is Cindy, i am a 3-month-old lab mix puppy. I am looking for a home where i can be socialized as part of my upbringing. I am very friendly and would like to be pampered every chance i get.

Am I cute or what
Location: Westhampton

AND FROM LITTLESHELTER.COM

This handsome litter of five, nine week old, Rottie mix pups was surrendered to us by their owner to find them homes. They are sweet, mushy babies that are just looking for a family to love. They are going to be stocky, big guys when full grown.

This adorable litter of four, seven week old pups can be adopted but cannot go home until Sat 11/29. They were brought to us after being found in a box in a gas station. They are (our best guess) Shep type mixes.

This adorable litter of three babies was saved from the NYC Animal Control facility. They will be available for adoption as of Sat, 11/22. They are sweet, snuggly and just waiting for their forever homes. All three are females.

Lisa: From what I have seen, a breeder will not even consider letting you buy a puppy as a gift. They want to do reference checks and get to know you. They usually have a few puppies and a lot of interested people on waiting lists. Maybe I have found the more extreme breeders but I emailed a few breeders this year and got pretty curt reponses.

Another member on this board, susans has a rhodesian ridgeback and dealt extensively with teh breeder so you can contact her.

If you are okay with a larger dog, I woudl suggest going to the North Shore Animal League. They ALWAYS have beautiful puppies (mostly labs but other dogs too). We keep going looking for smaller breeds but never find them.

Very cool, Lisa! Puppies are awesome...although a LOT of work!

We actually got ours by looking for breeders in the newspaper and then we went to visit and asked LOTS of questions.

Good luck!

Re: Puppy resources??

There are two very reputable rhodesian ridgeback breeders on Long Island. One is in Amagansett and one is in Sea Cliff.

We got our pup from the breeder in Sea Cliff.
She's the pet columnist for Newsday and she's very educated about the breed.

Not sure when she's planning her next litter but I know that she's already started meeting with prospective owners. We dealt with her for a year before we got our puppy. This was her first litter and she bred with another very reputable Kennel in New Jersey, where she got her 2 ridgebacks.

Her Kennel's name is Revodana Ridgebacks
Our pups dad was from County Line Ridgebacks.
I forget the name of the breeder in Amagansett.

If this is the way you plan on going it's good to meet with all the breeders so you can get a feel for them as well. I like how our breeder doesn't just sell a pup and disappear. She checks in periodically, we meet up with her dogs for play dates...she even takes the pup when we go on vacation. This applies to ALL the puppies from that litter. There aren't that many breeders that remain as involved throughout the pups life. Also, if there's EVER a problem with the dog...say for example my baby is allergic...she will always take her back and place her in a new home for us.

I don't have any ideas on where to get a pup, but I have to say, my sister has a Rhodesian, and she is the sweetest, most lovable dog. She's got tons of energy, but she can also be so mellow. She even knows that if she wants to play with the small dogs in the neighborhood, she has to lay down so that she can play on their level.

I had never heard of them before, but I absolutely love my sister's doggie. Good luck with whatever you decide. I can't wait to have a house so that we can get a puppy or two!

Re: Puppy resources??

Stef- the puppy would be a 'gift' for ME, not a suprise gift. So we can meet and get to know any breeders.

We decided the puppy may have to wait a bit. So we can get settled on not have to worry about the needs of the puppy on top of our own moving stress...

But now we have some more time to do some reserach, contact breeders etc. Susans - thanks for the breeder info. I had FM'ed you remembering you had a RR, but I sent it to susanj, didn't realize you were back to susans.

As I said, I'd love to rescue a dog, but we don't want the larger breeds like labs (sorry Lori, but thats for offering up the info!). We'll have to keep checking North Shore once on LI.

Stef - what kind of dog have you been looking for?

Re: Puppy resources??

i can't say enough about the Boston Terrier....they are a good size...not usually over 25 pounds)...are so loving...well adjusted...don't bark (too much ;) - but only when he thinks there is danger)...they are SO SMART...he can learn a trick in a few tries...but John doesn't like to make him do tricks...he feels it demeaning...

too bad I can't bring him to meet you thursday :(

edited to say...even though they are called a terrier...they aren't...they are considered non-sporting dog...not the yappy terrier some can be...

others are also bull terrier and french bulldog (this is how bostons were 'made') I would get one of those in a second too

Re: Puppy resources??

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
We actually co-own our dog with our breeder and we plan on breeding her late next year or early the year after.
I have a feeling that our pups mom will be bred before that. Even so, if you want a pup earlier, all the breeders know each other and most will point you to someone that's planning on a litter.

Another good thing to do is get on a message board or a mailing list for ridgeback owners and it'll give you some insight on the breed.
