Puppy's first heat? (Maybe TMI?)

Puppy's first heat? (Maybe TMI?)

OK, so here's my question. Ginny is scheduled to be spayed Oct. 19th. She turns 6 mos. the 11th. Our vet told me to 'Watch her vulva' to make sure we don't operate when she's in heat. But here's my confusion - I thought it would be BLATANTLY obvious when she went into heat. You know, like she'd be bleeding like we bleed for our periods? What does the vet want me to 'watch for', exactly?

It gets REALLY SWOLLEN.
My dog went through her first heat at aboutu 7 months- I got her spayed about 1 1/2 months later.
Their vulva like triples in size- you can't miss it- and they start acting really lethargic- you'll know-their breasts get swollen as well.
Then they do bleed- but they have the swollen vulva for like 2-3 weeks b/f the bleeding, which is why the Vet said that- they can't operate if they're in heat.
