Q for those who commute into NYC from the burbs (Westchester, LI, NJ, etc)

Just curious for those who commute from the burbs into NYC

- Are you within walkable distance to your local train/bus station?

- If not, do you (a) drive and park your car at the station via permit or meter parking, or (b) do you have someone drop you off (or some variation of the above)

I commute into NYC from Westchester via Metro North into Grand Central. I'll be the first to admit my commute is prob. easier than dealing with LIRR and Penn St. My train ride is only 35 minutes and I can walk to work from there. But I have to park my car at the station, and the parking prices are thru the roof! (just raised them again next year!)

It makes you wonder when you add it all up, is it really worth it to commute into NYC? (though I realize I make a much better salary in NYC than I could in Westchester, I'm just so weary of it all)

When DH worked in the city we took Metro North from White Plains to Grand Central and then walked to work. He used to park his car at his mom's house and walk down Battle Hill every morning, and then back up Battle Hill every night. Now let me tell you, Battle Hill is quite a treck!

I walk to the bus stop, it is at the end of my block (staten island) the alternative is walking to train, taking ferry, then subway, that is half the price, but 30 minutes longer.

When I was commuting to NYC ...

I drove to the LIRR station in Kings Park (did not have a permit and never got ticketed), took an express-ish train straight to Hunterpoint where I changed for the 7 train right into GCT (I worked at 200 Park Ave - Met Life Building).

I think my monthly was $200+ ...
I guess I'm lucky that I just transferred offices and make the same salary working in LI as I did in NYC. I am sure with gas prices what they are, I now spend as much if not more on gas that the LIRR ticket but I can get eat bfast/lunch for much less than in NYC.

Hi!

I just moved to NJ and commute to NY. I drive (can't walk) to the train. It's about a 10 minute drive. I pay $1 a DAY to park.

On LI, it used to be $25 a YEAR.

I also pay $70 a MONTH for a metro card and $240 a MONTH for taking NJ transit.

On LI, it used to cost me a flat fee of $250 a MONTH for a metro card and train pass.

So basically, in NJ I pay roughly:
$330 a month

Vs.

LI I paid:
$275 a month

Sickening, right!!!!!!!

Good thing is, I will be leaving here soon to student teach and to hopefully get a teaching job somewhere in NJ close to home.

Oh my - I know Battle Hill well and I think after a day's work I would collapse trying to walk up it at night

Thanks for the input, ladies . I appreciate it!

Based on some of your comments, I think I'm getting screwed this year!

I just received my parking renewal to park in Hartsdale train station (its by permit only for residents) and its costing me $500 a year to park now

If I used the metered parking, it would cost even MORE and its much further away , actually

So adding this on top of my $172 a month train ticket, I am spending over $2,500 a year in commutation

They can rook you in Westchester, because quite a few train stations just don't have adequate room for parking lots, and they have waiting lists years long for people to get a permit.

ETA: I just re-read what jozieb0925 posted.. OK, you definitely have it worse than I do I'll stop complaining now!!

Does your company pay for any of it? We just got some pretax dollar thing that I need to look into. It's sooo bad!! I feel like I work to pay off my commute!!

Felicia....If you add our two commutations up we pay a buttload of money just to get to and from work!

I pay $7.00 a day in tolls (the add gas...which comes to around $9.00 a day based on the gas mileage of my car and gas at around $2.20 a gallon)

That's well over $2K a year for me too! (Which is well over $4K between the two of us) Why don't we start thinking of working out of the house....maybe we can sell sweaters on Ebay or something.
