hello LIW'ers.... seeing that the divorce rate is like around 50% or so in the US, my question of the day is.....

Are you and FH signing a pre-nup?

me and FH talked about this and we're both really against it, maybe its cuz we're superstitious or naive or whatever, but we just think its just such a negative way to start our lives together.... so NO, we will not be signing one

how bout you girls?(and boys!)

any financial success that i have had over the last 3 years of my life is owed to my FW for putting me on track. so there is no need for a pre-nup here

We havent really talked about it...I cant see us ever doing that though...We dont have much to begin with...
I will however be keeping my own seperate bank account though. we will have a joint account for bills etc but I still would like to keep a savings account seperate and a small spending account too.

I certainly don't have too many assets to protect - but FH def does. We have kinda talked about it before, and we both agree that signing a pre-nup is expecting divorce (and we both know we will always be together). But, I would understand if he did want one god fobid anything were to happen. If we were both in the same financial situation - then no - I wouldn't want one. So, as of now....no...we are not getting a prenup.

The funny thing about it is though - is that I would almost feel more comfortable with him getting one...not that I am EVER expecting anything to happen to us....is that weird?

I want to do the same thing, we don't need a pre-nup..I don't see us needing one since we both aren't coming into the marriage with much

FH's financial advisor actually insisted that he set up one. FH was the soul beneficiary of his dads life insurance so he came out with a large sum of money. However we are not going to do one. We both have each other listed on our 401k plans as well as on various mutual funds & cd's. we will be together 10 years by the time we say 'I Do' & we both feel that its really not necessary.

no we will not be signing one.... I could see maybe doing one if one of us had a lot more money/assets than the other...but we are both in a similar financial situation right now.

I have nothing to protect. Does debt count? But, FH has a pretty strong savings, so I have offered to sign one for him. He said he would consider it. I don't think it is expecting divorce; it is just being cautious.

you need assets to have a pre-nup....unless my cat and his dvd's count as assets then we arent risking anything right now lol

I work in the finance world.... this is my advise

Pre-nups are helpful when there is a huge amount of money or large difference BUT

EVERYONE should do the following.
Have a joing account for bills and savings etc.

Put like 10% in your own account. This way IF something ever happened (which we all say it wont but peeople are wrong) then you have some money of your own. ALSO this can be used for the moped or prada purse you want without tapping into the savings. This way you dont have to feel guilty

He doesn't have much to protect.

I have a few stocks, bonds, and cd's set up here and there. Right now they are worth nothing of course but i don't know. (i lost 9 grand in 2 months and had a little anxiety attack lol)

I do feel a little superstitious about it like everyone else but i dunno. God forbid anything happened i don't see him as the person going after $ like that.. but who knows. $ makes everyone, esp fam act funny.

Food for thuogh i guess

I once heard that inheritence was not shared jointly. Meaning, if someone where to get a large inheritence, then the spouse would not be allowed to touch it. Especially in the case of divorce, they would have no right to any inherited money. Is this true? Any lawyers on here?
