FH and I have known each other for a very long time (10 years). His mother would not give me the time of day until we moved in together because FH told her it was serious. His brother and wife have always been very kind and nice, but I would never say that we are close.
So my question today is about our in laws. How have they embraced you over the years? Is there a difference now that you are engaged? Do you get along well?

I have gotten along very well with my soon to be in laws since day one. The only one that I have ever had problems with is my FBIL. When FH and I first started dating him and I were on really good terms. Then a few months into the relationship my relationship changed with FBIL and him and I had gotten into a huge fight. Well actually he verbally fought me. I knew he was drunk at the time and didn't completely take some of the things to heart. Then our relationship was rocky.
A lot of his issues with me were all made up in his head bc of his drug and alcohol problem. Now were are on pretty good terms. I have some issues with things that he does but he doesn't know it. FH knows it bc he has the same issues with him but we are keeping our mouths shut to try and support him as he has fallen off the wagon AGAIN.

I have always got along with my in laws. His father is the sweetest and his mom is too funny. I remember we were eating dinner at their house and my FH (Boyfriend at the time) served himself vegetables. FMIL said, 'You got him to eat vegetables!!! He really loves you' lol. After our engagement I think we all have got much more closer and I am truly blessed to be getting married and marrying into a beautiful family. His brother and I are closer and he loves the fact I bust my FH's chops. He said, 'All those years you picked on me as your younger brother and to see my FSIL do it to you - Priceless' = )

My relationship with my FMIL has always been a little rocky. I think it mostly has to do with the cultural difference (my FH is Filipino). Even though they came here almost 15 years ago, my FMIL hasn't really embraced the American culture as much as my FH has. I think it bothered her at first that I wasn't Filipino. She is very loud and a bit of a drama queen which I am not used to being that my mom is the complete opposite. She also hasn't shown much interest in the wedding and the planning process which is upsetting. My FFIL is great. He is very quiet and keeps to himself. I have always gotten along with him. My FBIL has only been in the country a little over a year. Both FH and I have our issues with him because he came here with his 3 kids and isn't being much of a father. FH always says he feels like he is the older brother because of the way his brother acts. We are hoping he gets himself together soon and begins to provide a good life for his children. I am lucky to say that I have always gotten along really well with FH's cousins and their children.

I have now and always had an amazing relationships with my FIL's. FBIL and FSIL were a different story... We never really got along until there was a tragedy where FBIL was dating one of my childhood friends and she was tragically killed in a house fire. We all became extremely close through this and still have a great relationship over 2 years later. Sometimes it takes something tragic to bring people together.

I have always gotten along very well with my future in laws. I am very close with both my FMIL/FFIL and with most of my FH’s siblings – there is some family drama in there that is too much to get into (and that I tend to try and stay out of). Overall, they have all always been great to me and we have never had any real issues :)
