I can totally relate!!! Here I am sitting at my desk eating and yes its because I am very busy but....There are distinct cliques here as well. They eat together, sit at meetings together. In my opinion, Id rather not have that image at work...Id rather stand out. True I am 'cool' with everyone...Id just rather not join a clique. They have asked me to eat lunch with them and I just make an excuse. It really is too high school for me and I just dont want to get involved!

Re: QOTD - How do you deal with work cliques?
Definitely cliques at my office. We merged 3 companies so there is a lot of history that divides people.
I've always been a floater - even in the HS cliques. I sort of hang out with all of them, but not all the time with any of them.
I eat lunch at my desk too, but mostly because I want to be on LIW and not be bothered by anyone asking me wedding questions!!
Mostly I just ignore it and hang out with the other Floaters or glom on when I feel like being social.

Re: QOTD - How do you deal with work cliques?
YES Im in the same situation. I just started working here about 3 months ago, its a very small office, only 3 other women. All of them have been working together for 2 years, and I definietly feel like the odd one out. They all go out to dinner together, hang out on the weekends, go to bars together and they have pictures of all 3 of them together all over their desks. My problem is that they all live near each other (they all live in Manhattan) and Il ive in Brooklyn. AND Im trying to SAVE money for upcoming wedding. So even if I was financially willing to go spend money at bars and whatnot with them every weekend, its a pain in the butt to have to travel further than them. Im just giving it time. Im friendly with them, but I wont go out of my way to be all girl-friend-y with any of them if its not convenient for me.
I have outside friends that I make to meet with after work.
I hope your situation gets better..

I don't think of it as cliques but I think it's normal for people to section off into smaller groups based on personalities and interests. There's no way every one can be friends with each other. I don't mean this that you don't like people. I have a handful of friends that I am closer to but for the most part the people in my office are acquaintances (granted there are over 100 people in my office).

Re: QOTD - How do you deal with work cliques?
My office is mostly women too!! But I don't notice cliques like I used to. When I started 4 1/2 years ago, there were a few cliques and I got pulled into one. But slowly the members left the company and I ended up alone at my desk with my lunch and my computer. Most of my imprint is like this, though, except when we have lunch meetings.
I notice that in other imprints of my company there are cliques and the sales, marketing and publicity depts are like there own sororities.
Sometimes I wish I belonged and I wish I had my clique to eat with, but other days I just appreciate the peace and quiet of my office.
I think cliques amongst 20 somethings are just extensions of college life and once we all get married and have kids, we have other concerns and other things to do during lunch...

Re: QOTD - How do you deal with work cliques?
I have found that every where I've worked, I've never fit into any ones click - I like to talk and socialize with different people - not just one group - I generally go to lunch by myself, and I definetly do not hang out with them on the weekend.

Honestly I think in offices wher ether are mostly women the cliques tend to be more common. BUt maybe thats just my personal experience. I get along with men way better.

Helena: You have the overgrown sorority girls too? (no offense to those who were in sororities but some of these girls scream the stereotype)
I never knew what trust fund babies were like until I started working!!!

I'm definitely the loner at work. Not in the sense that I don't talk to anyone, but in the sense that I don't ever fit into one 'group'. I talk to everyone, and I find that because of that, I hear crap from everyone's perspective. It's hard to not get caught up in it sometimes, but I try to stay out of it. I never got into it in high school and I sure as hell am not going to get into it now!

OMG - YES!!!!!!! I don't mean to offend anyone here or anything like that either - but they just make it so dang obvious how much better they are than everyone else bc daddy is a doctor and pays their rent.... sorry, beginning a rant there! I've always been really open minded and very independent, as have most of my closest friends - so it burns my a$$ to be looked down on bc my family doesnt have as much money as someone else's... gggrrr -
Well juliet, looks like we can be allies here!
You don't happen to work in publishing, do you? I remember hearing people tell me the industry was filled with trust fund babies from seven sisters schools with parents who paid their rent, but I thought they were kidding!! I know of at least 5 people whose parents supplement their incomes.
Now I know why my salary is so low. It doesn't have to go very far, because Mommy and Daddy pay for everything...

Re: QOTD - How do you deal with work cliques?
My first 2 years here I was a total loner. Now I have 2 close friends in my office, but I definitely wouldn't call us a clique. They don't really like each other, so I either have lunch or shop with one or the other. And I met peabody on here and she works in the building next to mine! So we grab lunch sometimes or shop during lunch. There are some cliques in my office, of older women. We were just making fun of one because she was loudly telling 3 other women in the clique about her affair with this guy who then broke it off because she was a 'loosey goosey.' People need to keep their voices down!

We must be the only two who actually have to pay our own rent. Actually, I shouldn't say that anymore. My imprint has more working class people than we used to. At one point, though, we were filled with rich kids
Which house are you at? And what do you do?
I am Penguin and I am an Asst Managing Editor in one of the children's imprints...
