QOTD - How does the election outcome effect/worry/please you

Original post by DebMaher

In no way should this lead to personal attacks and remember, no need to lug along pushing for a particular candidate (something that frequently yields nonsense and disrespect) -- I am asking about your specific issues -- are you grateful or are you concerned about something particular given the outcome. Let us all please remain respectful as we state opinions.

For me, I am concerned that with the Republican majority along with the current administration, that many issues of civil rights and privacy will erode. I worry about the new appointees to the Supreme Court and the fact that we will move in the direction to overthrow Roe V. Wade and block scientific research.

While in Italy this summer I couldn't find one English speaking Italian who agreed with our methods... I must have asked at least a couple of dozen and from various parts of the country. Many countries that are in the coalition want out and they are pressuring their leaders.

dont expect Europe to say yay to war, Europe has been through WWI and WWII (countries have been totally destroyed and a lot of them are still struggling) and I dont think they will support wars that easily

''I'm thrilled to have a President in office who is not a proxy for popular opinion but rather makes decisions based on what he believes is best for the country''

WOW- scary way of looking at it I think!

To think that your president doesnt care what you think and will do just what he wants is NOT the purpose of a republic.

Um, that's not what I said. If you want a simple proxy for public opinion, why have a president at all?? We should just vote on every single thing that goes on in this country, right?

Guys, please. Let's stick to opinions only. We have NWR AND now the other board for all the other stuff. I would like to think that we 05ers transcend the pettiness and can talk about even difficult topics respectfully to learn about alternative viewpoints.

I don't think that defending my point is 'petty'

Nor do I, Eileen, not at all. I just want us to keep the discussion flowing respectfully. I think you have a really valid point and that is precisely why I would love to hear more about it. If we degenerate into what the NWR board keeps doing which is two people breaking off into a heated debate, rather than expalnations of opinions, this discussion will not continue and I think we all lose. THat is what I mean.

Don't be shocked. If you watch any global media... BBC World for example, you will see that some of our most staunch allies have been scratching their collective heads for the last four years. Even the British (who are 99.9% of the time are with us) are confused so much so that Tony Blair is hanging by a thread... the British people are not happy that he is with Bush and the way he is going about handling this. In a parliamentary system they can call for an election, they don't have to wait four years.

I wasn't shocked at the message of the mirror - I was just shocked at the wording. The Mirror has been against the war from the beginning - they're interesting to compare to another British tabloid - the sun - which is much more conservative.

But both are total rags - I read them for the sports coverage. . . I dont think the front page of the mirror really contributes to any intellectual discussion of US politics.

I love BBC world - much more intelligent discussion of the issues.

you cant honestly believe that if kerry won things would be so much better, he is not a miracle worker and being a president is not an easy job... I tend to take what the politicians say with a grain of salt... I am glad that Bush won, I want him to succeed in this fight with terrorism, I might be wrong but what human isnt, we are not perfect...

You are absolutely right Kerry can't work miracles, but I think he has a much greater concern for sparing the lives of our troops and Iraqi women and children that are dying because our offensive over in Iraq. Also, he is not about using religion as a way to legislate other people's morality onto others. I think it is disheartening that Bush won in part because our fellow Americans came out to vote so that they could to discriminate against other Americans (gay marriage). Separation of church and state is crucial to the maintainance of our democracy.

BUMP

Anyone else? I remain very concerned about the supreme court and the claim of a 'mandate' under which highly conservative judges will be appointed to the court of appeals and supreme court.

I am pleased with the outcome of the election. Although I may not agree with all that Bush stands for (ie abortion rights/stem cells), I think he is right person to carry out what needs to be done in the next 4 years.

I think the war is unfortunate, but I still support his actions. FH was in the first Gulf War and believes there is reason to be there. I think Bush made a decision based on the information he had.

What were we supposed to do, nothing?! Kerry even said he was going to hunt down the terrorists and kill them. We would need foreign help to do this, the arab nations would still hate us, and so would the rest of the world for getting involved.

It's a no win for anyone. Give Bush a chance, things can't change overnight. He set out to make some positive changes but thousands of people dying put a kink into the plans. Unfortunately, security must remain a top priority for this nation for the rest of our children's lives, and the children of our children. That would not have changed no matter who the president is.

Although you may not agree, I urge you to show support for our leader. At a time when our nation is so divided, we should learn to work together.

Definitely is frightening having him back in office. And now he wants to privatize social security. This will just make it worse for us!
