QOTD: What are the promises that you have made to your child

Again, one of my journal questions. What promises have you made to your child? What promises do you know you will break in his/her lifetime, not because you want to but because you cannot control the World?

I promise to love my child, everyday, no matter what is happening in our lives or the World. I promise to chase the monsters from out under the bed and from inside the closet. I promise to be my best to keep 'real' monster away. I promise to give you hugs and kisses and I hope that, on many occasions, they help you feel loved, wanted, adorded and safe. I promise to listen, but I know there will be days when I might not listen closely enough or I will let 'life' interfer. I promise to try my best, and when I don't handle something very well, I promise to apologize to you and try to make it right. I know that I will make mistakes every single day, even though I don't want to. I promise to try really, really hard to let you make your own mistakes even though that will be SOOOO hard to watch. I know you have to make your own mistakes in order to learn and grow-up but I wish you didn't have to learn any of the hard lessons in life. I wish I could give you the knowledge, without you feeling any of the pain or heart ache but I know that is just not the way it works. But I can promise to give you my shoulder to cry on, my arms around you and a place that you can always come home to.

I have been thinking about how my mother always came to see if we were ok if we were upset....she always swallowed her pride and tried to make things right...

Mommy loves you more than you will ever know. I promise to always be your biggest fan throughout your life, but always know when to hold my applause. I promise to smile at you everyday, even if I am sad, hurt, angry or worried. I promise to read you poetry and teach you about love. I promise to teach you how to dance and sing. I promise to teach you the importance of self respect and self esteem. I promise to help you learn the rewards of hardwork and independence.

I promise to be your voice when you need words, your strength when you are weak and your eyes when you cannot see...but only when you ask me. I promise not to stand in the way of you making your own choices and learning your own lessons, despite how I might feel about them. I promise to be firm in my discipline, but not rigid. I promise to help you build your own wings to fly. I promise you, my son, that I will know when it is time to 'let go.'
