QOTWeekend! How do you think your parent's marriage(s) have/had an effect on your future marriage?
Have they set an example you would like to try and follow? Any mistakes you have learned from?

My parents marriage was not one to hope to take after, but FI parents have been married almost 43 years and are each others very best friend.

Well my parents are divorced.. seperated when I was 13 I think.
I really dont go by them b/c they both had a bad track record ( both married once before )
But I look to my sister and her husband as an example and my fh's parents. They have been married for I think 33 years.

My FI parents and my parents are both still married. FI parents are going on I believe 36 years and my parents are going on 29 years. I hope because his parents and my parents are still together after all those years we can follow down the same path as them.

My parents and his parents have been married for over 30 years. They have never separated. They set good examples for his. They should us what family is all about.

Yes, I think so. FH and I are both lucky enough to have parents that are still married. I think we can both look to our parents as a source of inspiration and example.

Despite the fact that my parents got divorced, they both remarried wonderful people and each have been remarried for over 20 years. I think they've been awesome examples of being friends with your spouse, of compromising, and putting effort into a marriage over the long haul. I know plenty of people whose parents never separated or divorced (i.e., 'have been together for 30 + years) who I would never want as my role models. It's about a lot more than just longevity.

They are more in love today then they were when they first got married. I admire it. My mother still puts on a little blush before my father gets home from work.
This made me feel warm.

My parents have a wonderful marriage. I think that is why I waited so long to get married since I was looking for someone willing to build what they have. I have learned that marriage takes a lot of work, that it just doesn't come naturally. I can only hope we can emulate their marriage. As for my FH, his father died when he was young and his mom remarried someone he can't stand. I think he partially decided to marry me due to the family I came from and who they are.

My parents are divorced and have been since I was 9 months old, so I don't really know if there is an effect. Since I don't remember them together, and I have wonderful other family memories, I would have to say the others what I try to look at.

My parents are coming up on their 40th wedding anniversary this may...they go for walks on the beach, read the paper on the front porch together all summer and my father still gives my mother a huge hug and kiss when he walks in the door. They definitely have give me hope that a marriage can be beautiful after so many years and so many kids (6!). My fiancee's parents have been married for 31 years..so we both believe it has helped us realize what it takes to make a relationship work. I consider us lucky! :)

My parents work so hard at it every day - they are very different people, but make it work.
They seperated for 3 years when i was small and it was a terrible time. They got their crap together, actually got back together, renewed their vows, and had three more kids.
Now, they teach classes on how to communicate within a marriage and tell me all the time how much work and communication it takes to keep it healthy and 'spicy' after 25 years... and my Dad still pinches my moms butt when she walks by.
