Queens elementary teachers...need your help

I must be the worst mother in the world. I am trying to register my son for kindegarten for September and I've called two schools and they said registration is over I had no idea registration started so early. I am soooo new to this. I live in Jamaica but will travel if the school allows out of district students. I'm also looking for a school that may offer afterschool program.
So please help me not let my baby be a drop out before he even starts.

awww, i'm not a teacher, but I'm surprised registration is over?? unless the rules changed, my mom registered my brother only a few weeks before school started.

I know...I always thought the same thing. I may just end up putting him in the catholic school across the street from my job but the tuition is going to kill me.

How far are you willing to travel? My sisters go to a great school (its more like a charter school). If I remeber correctly they will take 20% of their students from outside their zone. The school is called the Cypress Hills Community School (PS 89).

They are the only school in Brooklyn (and likely NY) with a fully bilingual program. They teach non-spanish speaking kids to speak spanish (is the cutest thing). They are also one of the first schools in Brooklyn to receive a Save the Music grant. They have their own band, many of the kids who are in the band make it into Julliard (into their elementary school program).

Also, the school has ties with an afterschool program that located in the same building, its a Beacon Program run by Cypress Hills Local Development (a non profit). The program is on first come first served basis (on the day of registration) and its free.

If you want more info FM me.
