I'm doing it all myself. I used a TA once in 2004 and that was for a trip to Italy with my mother. It was a tour and some independent travel so it was a little complicated. It was also once of my first vacations so I was new to traveling.
I used Hermes Travel in Astoria. They were very nice and awesome. I think they are still around.
Honestly, I haven't been to a TA since b/c I feel like it's relatively easy to book a vacation and you can get AWESOME deals online. When I went to Greece in 2007, I did it all on my own and I regretted at one point not using a TA b/c booking ferries was confusing. But I did it, with the help of tripadvisor.com
My advice- get some quotes from TAs and then do your own research online.

I usually book everything myself- but for my HM I want to Liberty Travel on 193 and Northern Blvd in Flushing. Not too thrilled with them. But I booked the cruise with them. I am going to do my own flights though

I have never used a travel agent. I always booked all my vacations by myself (with the exception of the cruises I've been on because FMIL always takes care of the booking).

I booked my own trip to Costa Rica and went to 3 cities: Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. (Rain forest, cloud forest and rainforest/beach). I did my own research on Tripadvisor and got private transportation between all cities. It can def be planned on your own! Just so you know, Costa Rica has a 'rainy season' half of the year. Dry season is Jan-May. During rainy season, it rains in the afternoon for a little while but then clears up. My family went during rainy season and didn't mind that part..They just worked around the rain. I just wanted to give you a heads up on what to expect weather-wise. I can recommend tours. We did EVERYTHING. I travel alot and it was the best trip I've ever taken.
